Oh noes! Another internet slow thread... however, I'm sync'd at 2Mb?

Hi all

My net has been very stable for awhile now, I've had 4 re-syncs in the space of a few minutes though tonight but each time it's connected right back at the same speed.  Fantastic. :)  I think it's all the rain and thunder & lightning.  So yeah, currently sync'd at my max 2Mb but yet the net is slow when browsing sites.  I've tried a few downloads and I'm getting ~165kbps.  Which seems OK, not the fastest I've had, sometimes it's near the 200kbps mark.

However, Opera 10 is always putting the Turbo mode on for when it detects a slow connection (it compresses images, etc).

Sooo, my question ;) is why is everything slow.  My bro who is on the network noticed it tonight as well.  :dunno:  I've scanned for virus', spyware, etc.  All OK.

Thanks for any tips!

Rik

Hi James, can you try a BT test, I'd guess your profile is low.

Just as Rik says.

Because of the idiocy of BT Wholesale's Dynamic Line Management (DLM) computations, we can only guess at 'why'

For us the first thing must be 'what?'

Get the router login  (like xxxx@idnet.gwn or xxxxx@uk.idnet.dsln) and run the BT speed test speedtester.bt.com.  I see you did this back in December.

Copy and paste the result page that has your connection rates and DLM profile so we can see it.

Hi guys, thanks.  Here is the result from the test:-

Any good?

Speed's OK for profile, profile's OK for sync speed. If that's your normal sync speed, then there's nothing to worry about - otoh, if it's low, it may be a line issue. What's your attenuation and noise margin?

Hi Rik

Yeah that's my usual speed, just the net is really sluggish.

Attenuation - 61.1dB
Noise Margin - 15.0dB

Sebby

You could do a little bit better, I'd say, but that's quite a long line. Your problem is the noise margin is 15dB - the exchange would have raised this in response to instability. If it was the default 6dB target, you could sync up to double what you're currently sync'ing at. What's your setup like, i.e. have you removed ring wires or fitted a filtered faceplate?

Jimbo

Hi Sebby

Yeah it is indeed a long line, I think I'm one of the furthest away from my exchage.  Funny thing is, there are two exchanges, if I enter my postcode on SamKnows it sends me to one and if I enter my number it takes me to the other one.  Would IDNet be able to tell me for certain which I go to?  I'm wondering if I can ask to be connected to the other exchange?  If I use the coverage part of SamKnows they overlap above where I live.  I wouldn't mind swapping as the other exchange is set for the 21CN thing at the end of this month.  I'm ever so slightly closer to that one as well.

My setup is a BT 2700HGV Router and a shielded ADSL cable, then a Filtered faceplate on the Mastersocket.  Also had BT replace my line and fix some faults recently which has helped me get to 2Mb. :)

Sebby

IDNet would be able to tell you for certain, Jimbo. :)

It sounds like you've done everything you can. You could ask IDNet to see if they can get BT to manually reduce your target SNRM, but I warn you, it's not something that BT are usually keen to do. :(

Rik

The phone number gives you the accurate exchange, James. BT are very unlikely to change which you're connected to without a lot of money changing hands, we're talking thousands here. :(

Hmm do they take IOU? :)

Well by going off the phone number, that says I'm on the worse exchange. :(  Which I guess fits in with everything here.  Oh well, not to worry!

Thanks for all the help.
