Getting worried

OK - as some of you will know - I've had a problem with my connection degrading since WBC, which last Friday after playing with profiles in conjunction with BT, James at IDNet managed to get me stable and back to where I was pre-WBC (meaning no switching back to Max).

Today, I arrive home from work and notice SNR (as reported by the RouterStats icon) has dropped to 4 (dipping to 3.5), and further investigation shows that my sync has upped to 8,587 (upstream is steady at 960). Whilst I should be over the moon at this apparent improvement, and whilst I have confidence in the ST 585v6 to hold a connection with a low SNR, am I heading back to problem city Arizona (to paraphrase the Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin)?

Thoughts guys - should I let it run, or ask IDNet to intervene and cap me?

bRAS hasn't improved yet - but surely it's only a matter of time.

I think it's difficult to say, Steve. Could it be down to tonight's weather? Personally, I'd leave it a few days and see if it's a one off or if it is indeed the way things are headed.

It's definitely not the weather. The increased noise is wholly attributable to the increased sync. On the plus side - it's held steady tonight, but given ADSL2+ susceptibility to noise, I have to wonder if it will hold for any length of time. It worries me that this is BT's auto system deciding my line is stable enough for the increase, when clearly with SNR of 3.5 - 4 it shouldn't be.

On the flip side, on Max I held a solid connection on the edge of what SHOULD be stable, so maybe I'll be lucky again. I just don't want a sudden bout of noise to start flagging up instability errors and cripple my connection again.

I'll see how it goes, and if I get degradation again I'll ask support to do what they did last week, and cap my sync. If it holds, of course, then  :melike:

I have the same experience on WBC on a shorter line with a 585v6.

I'll just tell the firmware story in case it proves relevant:

I had to put firmware 8.2.2.5 on the router to resolve connection issues that showed up with WBC first on 6.1.4.3 and then a number of later firmwares -- maybe because of IFTN (Infineon)/Huawei MSAN.

I've now been connected for 17 days at SNRM 4-4.5, through two mild thunderstorms.  I deliberately chose a re-sync at my peak noise time of around 11:30 AM.  Basically, I was syncing even higher, and when the margin dropped to 3.5 for a stretch shown by RouterStats, I re-synced and got the ideal profile for SNRM 4-4.5.

I am also seeing, on a 2700, a tendency to re-sync at odd times, eg 8am, to higher speeds. At this time, WBC seems to lack the stability of Max, but is doesn't seem to be kicking in with DLM in response.

Well - tentatively - I think I'm stable - same sync - SNR 4.5 (dipping to 4 and even 3.5 but no re-sync).

This router does hang on well. I last checked bRAS just shy of 3 hours ago and it was still 6,500, but a recent download suggests it's improved during that time (can't re-test until the 3 hours is up). I hate to say7 it but, I hope it doesn't improve any more since that will ultimately lead to degradation.
