To have two 3G dongle modems installed (though obviously not connected) on a machine at the same time (given that everyone seems to be using the same make of dongle), so that I could move between networks (I'm thinking 3 and Vodafone) according to coverage?

I don't think that would be a problem. They're likely to be different hardware anyway.

I'm not sure Rick, but from what I understand they work on the same principal a mobile phones so the software is probably identical to all types, each modem is tied to its own network as are the phones and in the same way it is possible to get it unlocked, there are sites that offer this service, at a price, after unlocking you would just need to change the sim to change the network.  Having two dongles connected at the same time is I think going to cause a conflict.

if i remember rightly at some point in time i had both 3 and Tmobile dongels installed on a laptop at the same time
