Unable to connect Yesterday

Did anybody else have trouble connecting yesterday?

As usual I tried to connect at about 0530 but no success. I checked all the plug connections. No result. I thought perhaps the server was down, so I tried at intervals during the day - no success.

This morning I switched on as usual at about 0530 and connected straight away.

Strange things happen! Must have been something I did or didn't do.

Everything was working normally here, sounds like it was a local issue, maybe BT forgot to do something after working on your exchange

Did you leave it at least 30 minutes between each attempt ?

The most likely cause was a "stale session", did you contact Idnet Support by phone ?

Thanks for your reply, Kinmel. I didn't know about "stale sessions", but some of my attempts were separated by well over 30minutes since I thought the problem was at the server and there was no point in bashing away with attempts, while the techies were probably already working on it.

I didn't use the help line. I have have a hearing problem and hate using the phone. The people on the other end usually speak far too fast in spite of my asking them to slow down and speak clearly. I was working up to a telephone battle today, but thank goodness it wasn't necessary.

My router log showed a couple of PPP drops around that time, but they only lasted a few minutes each.

Connection seems OK now. I think the problem was in  my own PC. I think it needs a good clean up. I've got a local tech coming in today to give me some help and advice, so hopefully it will all be sorted out. might cost a bit but it will be worth it.

A very friendly techie. Had a good clean up. One replacement fan.

However, he had the same problems with connecting that I had, although it worked perfectly in the workshop. To cut a long story very short, the cause of the problem was simple. I have recently turned over to using mains electric to connect the PC to the router, and the extension leads I had were not exactly new but were surge protected. changed the plug into the wall socket and the problem disappeared!    :blush:

That is an unusual solution, not something you would think of generally.

I've heard of some routers not liking to be connected to UPS, Robert, so I suppose this falls into the same category. Not something I'd have thought of, though.
