Don't know why I got excited about this afterall I bet my copy won't arrive until the middle of next week I may be pleasantly surprised and hopefully the dog wont destroy it as it passes from the mailbox to the floor. I am unsure what resemblance a piece of mail has to a rat or a cat and thus needs to be destroyed.

I wonder is it because it will be my first 64bit OS,it will be quicker and occupy less space than the previous OS the modifications to the Dock,Finder and Expose all look promising.Perhaps coloured by my first Vista install which on an average machine was a huge disappointment.

It is reassurring to note looking at the Apple community forum that it is not as simple as inserting a DVD and going for a coffee, people are having a variety of problerms with the install. I say thank goodness for that,wouldn't life be simple if it was all straightforward. I hopefully can look forward to many hours of frustration providing the teeth marks in the DVD are not too deep.

PS I think I will need a cloned copy of the drive from the old OS on an external drive in addition to  the Time machine backup, afterall one can't be too careful.

But of course the kexts don't modify the O.S.; during loading the O.S. itself seeks out and invokes the kexts, which it then uses to operate hardware.  The homebrew kexts are only created where a hardware manufacturer has not yet supplied suitable drivers, the same way as also happens with Linux drivers.

I know they don't modify the OS as such, it depends on whether in law they are regarded as part of the operating system as supplied.  Therefore supplying additional ones is regarded as 'modification'.  I agree it might be a stretch....  Throw in the fact that parts of the OS are open source and it is a whole can of worms,  one reason why Apple have been content to leave the OSX86 project alone.  It's only when someone starts to make money out of it that they get interested. 

Of course product activation and media protection systems only inconvenience the innocent and prove no barrier at all to those who use pirated software

I agree and, since I don't generally use pirate software regarding it as rarely (though not always) worth the bother, I'm one that would be inconvenienced.

Isn't it also part of the license agreement that the Mac OS software should only be installed on Apple equipment.I know of a least one US company that produces non Apple mac OS machines but unsure what's happening regarding legal moves

Our office will be closing at 4pm today, and given that no one in the UK seems to have received their copy of SL, I think I'm going to head to the Apple Store in Regent Street after work and pick up a copy. I can just send the other copy back if/when it arrives.
