Just had the IP of my line increased without asking

Since the ups and downs of switching to ADSL2+, the IP on my line has either been 2500Kbps some of the time, but more recently, 3000Kbps.

Since Friday and without phoning support, this has now been increased to 3500Kbps

These are the results from a BT Speed Test this morning:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 3202 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.

(my connection rate has always been around the 3700Kbps before Friday)

My Netgear DG834v4 router has the following stats:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4219 kbps 863 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 29.4 db
Noise Margin 9.0 db 5.3 db
(the Noise margin I think has come down from 12db downstream)

Is this just a blip or can I expect to continue with these speed in the future as I thought the IP was sorted over the first 10 days, I've now been with ADSL2+ for 3 months?

Your profile changes continuously, in line with your sync speed (though it goes down immediately but up after anything up to five days). Nothing is fixed with Max or WBC, except the fault threshold rate, which is set at 70% of the maximum stable rate achieved during the first 10 days - and even that can change if BT want it to!

It may be that BT have done some work on cables or at the exchange which has improved the noise level on your line, leading to a faster sync. I note your d/s noise margin is 9db, reduced from 12db, that would add about 5-700k to your sync speed. When a noise margin is reduced automatically, it indicates the line has been stable for at least two weeks. The noise margin would have been increased, from the default target of 6db, in response to instability.

I have checked various speed checker websites and it is suggested on one that I could expect to see speeds of up to 6MB. Is this a reality? I can't remeber which site said that now. Other sites say 2MB, another 3.0MB, who do I believe?

Would the BT iplate make any difference or is just a £7.99 + P&P wasted?

Before the switch to ADSL2+ I was quoted an increase in speed from 2.4MB to about 2.8MB, getting 3.3 or 3.4 is an absolute bonus

6Mb doesn't seem likely on that line, tbh, 3.5-4.5 would be more likely, the latter if you can get your target noise margin down.

The iPlate might make a difference but, tbh, it's a lot cheaper and just as easy to remove the ring wire at each socket.

You might find that you have more to come. My target margin has reduced from 9db to 6db and then to 3db over the past week, so it looks like the old Max rule book has gone out of the window and we are all on a new learning curve now. I've had a 4M profile for the past five days (also happening faster than under Max), so I've gained a full meg from WBC.

Update:

I've noticed that my router is now connecting at around the 5000kbps mark, 1000kbps higher than the previous regular connection

BT Speed Test gave me these results:

5067 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM),
873 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 3500 Kbps (the same as before)

My router stats have also changed with the noise margin a lot lower, (it was previously around the 10db mark):

My question is this, with these improved figures, why hasn't the IP of my line been increased?

I always turn my router off when I'm not at home, I don't like leaving things on (blame my mother for that!), especially as the router always seems to be warm.

Would this affect my connect stats?

It shouldn't. Don't switch off more than 10 times an hour. That said, routers are designed to be run 24/7 and are more likely to fail through frequent power cycling.

I'm guessing that I'm approaching the maximum possible connection speed now?? I'm about 1.5-2km from the exchange, Stratford in east London.
