Does IDNet allow joint-name accounts?

Some of us are reaching the age when we feel we should make things easy for our spouses if we should die. (Heaven forbid!) So my question is: does IDNet allow joint-name accounts? I have already ordered a phone account and am now considering transferring my broadband over.

Hi Terry and welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

You can only, currently, have a single name on the account, but can be billed jointly. Like you, I have spent some time thinking about this problem, as the utilities are all in my name, and I'd expect to die before Sue. As you've already moved your phone line to IDNet, they would be able to switch the account name on broadband too without a cease. All they'd need is a copy of the death certificate, as a bank would.

Rik: I read your excellent post about the Grim Reaper some time ago and that was one of the reasons that I am moving my phone from BT  to IDNet. I realise that IDNet try to make things easy for the surviving spouse so is there any particular benefit in being billed jointly? Will that make things a little bit easier, or is it unnecessary?

I've taken the plunge and arranged to migrate my broadband to IDNet later this month. First impressions: great customer service! :)

They will be your second impressions, too, Terry. Are you on a WBC-enabled exchange?

Tip: As soon as you get the email from IDNet with your login details, you'll be able to set up, and start using, idnet.com email addresses. You'll also be able to set up your photo gallery, webspace and blog if you want to.

Also, be aware that, regardless of your billing date, your bandwidth allowance runs from the 1st of each month. IDNet will adjust your billing date if you wish, and they will also combine phone and BB into a single bill if you ask them to.

FWIW I moved to iDNet last week.  I filled in the online form at around 10am Tuesday.  Within an hour or so I had all my login details and a date for the migration to take place - in my case by 6pm the following Friday.  By 1pm I had my iDNet email set up and tested, although I've not yet bothered with the web space.

Friday morning switched on the modem - no connection!  Realising the migration had taken place early I input my iDNet details, rebooted the modem and have enjoyed my iDNet connection since. 

The only problem I have had is with my domain mail which as a perfect example of Sodt's Law chose the same time to receive a series of DDoS attacks.  Long story, but had I been trying to communicate  between the hosting company and a script jockey in Bangalore rather than iDNet (needed to flush the DNS cache),  I would rapidly have lost the will to live.

Another very satisfied customer. :) My phone line was transferred earlier in the week and my broadband migrated across to IDNet early this morning without a hitch. The customer service from inquiry through sales to completion has been superb. BTW, yes, it was possible to add my wife's name to the account.

I will not be able to join in discussions with the speed merchants here. ;) I am on a fixed 2mbps service because of my long line in a rural location. Stability is much more important to me than speed.

Anyway, I am very pleased to be here!

Welcome to happy land. :) What are your line stats - noise margin and attenuation? If you've got a fixed 2M service, they must be better than mine.

Thanks, Rik. I found that fitting a BT I-Plate doubled my possible speed. My neighbours are on a fixed 1M service (or less!)

I'm amazed BT allowed a 2M service at 51db, the qualifying level used to be 43db or less. I know because, as I have a 57db line, I could only get 1M fixed rate. With Max, I got 2.5M, with WBC I am getting 4M. You've got plenty of margin there, I suspect you'd get 3M or more on Max.

Yes, probably could  on Max get 3M but there is a price to pay in stability. My line isn't happy when the SNR drops below 15.

Anyway, in real world use, except for large file downloads which I do infrequently, the difference between 2M and 3M is imperceptible. On large, popular websites the experience is limited by the speed served by the server depending on the load on it.

It might be interesting to run Routerstats for a while and see what's happening to your noise margin.

I agree, though, that I prefer stability over speed.
