Hi,

I kind of asked this question in the 2700HGV section but to attract ahigher audience I ask again here.

For those unfortunates like me that dont have 8Meg or more to cry about!! but instead scrape along the BT copper infested gutters to eek at a measy 2Meg MAX can any of you confirm the benefits (if any) of a move to ADSL2+  ?

I have been advised that this upgrade is more suited to those with higher speeds / shorter lines etc then for someone on a long line with poor line stats like me but would be interested if anyone out there has an experience for longer line migrations ?

I would be "happy" to not lose any speed (maybe even gain a tad :o ) but gain the bandwidth, either way happy to hear all input!!

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.

Basically, Red, WBC has given me an extra 500k, occasionally 1M, on a 57db line, bumping me from 2.5M on Max to 3-3.5M on WBC. It is more noise sensitive, so it's important that you ensure your internal wiring is as good as it can be. There have been some teething troubles, with BT having 'under dimensioned' their network, but they seem to have found some urgency in correcting that as BT Retail starts to launch the service themselves.

Could you post your line stats?

ReDGryphoN

I will post them if you promise to laugh!!!

But that will have to wait till I am back home!

We never laugh, Red, most of the staff have long lines. ;)

Hey Red,

Personally, I'd avoid it. My line has taken a dip since the move to ADSL2+ and was a lot faster on ADSL2. However - you will benefit from more bandwidth if you move to the ADSL2+ package. Swings and roundabouts really.
FYI my line is about 3.9km with attenuation of 53dB and SNR of between 14db and 16db.

Was the noise margin at that level with Max, Stu?

Hi all,

I'm in the same situation as the OP, currently with Zen on one of their very few LLU in their hometown of Rochdale, I'm paying a kings ransom each month for 2 mbps, though being 4 miles from the exchange I should be grateful I suppose. WBC is enabled on my exchange, would it be beneficial to me ? Any advice greatly appreciated, line stats as follows( please don't laugh  )

      Down      Up
SNR (dB):   4.6      7.0
Attn(dB):   63.5      31.5
Pwr(dBm):   17.1      12.4
Max(Kbps):   2368      948
Rate (Kbps):   2176      768

Great forum btw  :)
cheers
James.

Rik

Hi James and welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

You might just benefit from WBC, it actually does extend the reach of ADSL, but it really depends on how noisy your line is. It's certainly a marginal call for you, the only way you'll know for certain is to try it - but be aware that there's no going back, once BT have connected you to an MSAN, they are unlikely to let you get back onto a DSLAM.

Thanks for the kind words, they're appreciated. :)

We do. :(

In comparison to some here, at 2.6 miles out it seems like I am on top of the exchange.

Given you're at a 12db margin, Red, it might be wise to leave WBC for a while.

I don't remember it being that high. If I remember rightly (i usually don't) it was about 8-10. It was only recently it jumped, oddly a few weeks after my ADSL2+ training period.

Rik

The line could have been more unstable with WBC, resulting in a higher target NM. It would pay you to run Routerstats for a 24 hour period and see what the variations are.

ReDGryphoN

Rik,

Yes noise margin is not so good, I was hoping for the increased bandwidth because its a cheap upgrade as I am now approaching the 5GB limit every month.(Who invented the iplayers!!)  Seems a shame to have to pay a lot more for 30GB on Max but that might be my only option.

Many thanks anyway, if it was not for the 2700 I would be down to 1-1.5MB so its all relative.

I can still kill orcs in Middle Earth with it as it is!

That puts things into perspective, Red. ;) For me, WBC has worked, for most people it's been a success story, but there is a risk for some that things will be worse rather than better and, as it's practically irreversible, it's probably best to wait a while and let the service mature.

But will it mature into a bottle of fine wine, or vinegar....it is BT we are talking about

Rik,

Am I reading it right that as BT et al rip out DSLAMS then you may be forced to have the "upgrade"?

Any long line "heroes" taken the plunge ?

Hi ReD,

my understanding is they are only removing them when possible, but to help male it possible they won't move people back to one after they've moved of to adsl2+.

It wouldn't surprise me if in the future they start doing lift 'n' shifts to consolidate the lines to a lessor number of dslams.

I've taken a brave pill after talking to IDNET support and in particular James.

6 days to ADSL2+ on my long long long...l..o....n....g......line

So as it turns out I am a the long line hero!! I will let you know of course how it goes, James has given me some assurances that he can save my soul from the "dance with the devil" if it goes "Pete Tong" and "sits down" so in the meantime I intend to "keep the faith". (I think thats enough musical references)

So the game is on, in the blue corner we have Sir Stupid and in the ReD corner (sic) we have Sir Brave. ( I have no idea where Sir Robin went probably ran away!)

Keep you posted

and yes I probably have had too much caffeine today!
