As many of you know, I'm in the process of setting up a new desktop machine. My current spec is:

Intel P4D 3.4GHz
Foxconn mobo, Intel chipset 975?)
ATI Radeon X1600 graphics 256MB
2GB DDR-RAM 567MHz
2 x 200GB WD Caviar SATA HDs
Viewsonic VP201s TFT monitor (1600x1200)
XP Pro

The new spec is:

Intel Core Duo E6700 (2.66GHz)
Foxconn mobo, Intel 965 chipset
nVidia GeForce 7950GT graphics 512MB
2GB Corsair DDR-RAM 800MHz
2 x WC Caviar 320GB SATA HDs
Viewsonic 2030b TFT monitor (1600x1200)
XP Pro

Patch levels are the same on both machines, software is essentially the same, especially running processes.

Everything is fine except for Photoshop 6.0.1 (I haven't upgraded because my licences don't qualify for a UK upgrade - they came direct from Adobe in Seattle). This works fine on the current desktop, and my notebook, and also the current desktop before it was rebuilt. Significantly, all three of these machine incarnations used ATI cards.

However, on the new machine, when I load a JPEG, TIFF or other non-PSD file into Photoshop, it will draw instantly, then at about 1 second intervals, it will redraw the image twice, producing a sort of flicker after which is is stable. However, if I load a PSD file, this does not happen.

I've tried reducing the graphics acceleration all the way, in steps, to none, but nothing helps. I've also tried running in compatibility mode, but it still does it.

I have run out of ideas, particularly as it only seems to affect non-native files. If anyone one has any thoughts, please chuck them my way.

TIA

Id say that your Nvidia drivers are incorrectly installed, or not installed at all...but thats just a guess!

FYI: Im also using a 7950 GT 512mb :)

Rik

I've just re-installed the latest drivers that Evesham pointed me at, October 2006, Avenger. Do you know of anything later? Device Manager says it's happy with the card and other apps don't show the issue, so I was wondering age/compatibility - but that hasn't been an issue with previous machines. :(

FYI dont use the drivers on the nvidia site...they suffer from a memory leak at the moment!

Im using...91.47 i think

Rik

I'm at 93.71... That is the latest on the nVidia site which Evesham sent me to.

93.71 is known to have issues (inc the memory leak) - 91.47 is the second newest, im having no problems with them.

Rik

Thanks, Evesham! :( Any idea where I could d/l the earlier version, Avenger (CD is the same as the website - unusual in itself...)

You're not, are you Rich. :)  May thanks for that, between machine and forums, I haven't had a chance to look for myself. It's downloading as I type.

I appreciate your help. You've just been karma'd.  :-*

I recommend having a look at www.omegadrivers.net

It also pays to have A Driver Cleaner to get rid of previous driver files. It is actually guarenteed to fix any issues caused by driver conflicts when the read me files if ollowed exactly.

Rik

Thanks, mate, I'll get onto it tomorrow, assuming I can get the Amazon fraud problem I'm having sorted!
