Sync speed. Will it always try and go faster or just settle on a value?

Hello all!

This is not really a help related thread, but more of a question.  Sorry if posted in the wrong section.

I recently upgraded the firmware on my temporary router, my 2700 died a few weeks ago so I've been using an old Netgear jobby.  At first, it was the usual story with my line.  Speeds ranging from 1-2Mbps.  However, since flashing the firmware I've been up and connected now for 306hrs!       What makes it even better is that it's been connected for this length of  time at 2Mbps.  Result!  My stats below:-

ADSL Link             Downstream   Upstream
Connection Speed   2048 kbps   448 kbps
Line Attenuation                  56 db   15.5 db
Noise Margin                  13 db   17 db

I'm just wondering, now that it's been connected for so long, why is it not trying to maybes go higher?  Does it know that it can't because of the noise margin being quite big?

Thanks for any input.  Like I say, not complaining, just curious.

A router won't try to go faster, Jimbo, it will sit and maintain the connection for as long as it can. Leave it another 4 days and then try forcing a re-sync, by that time, DLM should have dropped your target NM, and you may gain some extra speed. The NM change will only occur after 14 days without any loss of sync (and, on occasion, without any errors), but should gain you 5-700k in sync speed. If that works, and you can hold sync at the new margin for another 14 days, then you'll get a further 3db drop and another 5-700k in sync, repeating until either you reach a target NM of 6db, or your line becomes unstable.

Thanks for the help.   Hmm, I always hate forcing a re-sync when it's been doing so well, what happens if it's less.... how would I live with myself.

That's always the gamble. Re-sync in the morning for the best speeds, at night for the best stability.

or you can leave it and when it finely does re-sync you may find you gain more speed. basicly any gain you could get would probably happen then though rik will knows more on the subject
