Anyone having speed issues today ?

My usual 5mb speed is all over the place - one test shows 5mb, then within minutes I am getting very slow pages on the internet and the speed drops to 0.6 mb - Ping is normal at around 40ms  ???

Sebby

Have you run an actual BT speed test? Could you post the results? :)

Dopamine

Yes, varying and slow here too. 3730Kbps for a 7150k profile. Horsham, West Sussex.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.

Download speed achieved during the test was - 3730 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps

Why does the test result say "Test1"? Should there be a test 2?

My connection seems to be ok

Download speed achieved during the test was - 6003 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:

Maybe a change in wind direction has caught BT out again

There's nothing really wrong there, other than the throughput being a bit low for the profile.

That may be but check out the upload speed :(

Lance

Maybe I'm missing something but what is wrong with your upload sync? Its at the normal max connection rate of 448.

Upload doesn't look right. That could be due to a few reasons:

1. you've got an application running, such as P2P, that is using upload bandwidth;
2. your upload sync is not right for some reason;
3. it's just an issue with the speedtest.net server, or the route to it;
4. something else!

Rik

It's worth pointing out that BT give no guarantees at all on upload speed, which is why it's not included in their own test.

Test 2 is only offered if your speed falls outside the acceptable range BT quote in the test.

It is definitely my "Up" speed that is causing the slow load of pages - cant get a speed higher than 100k at the moment, normally get 380 or so :(

make browsing a very painful event at the moment.  Have switched router off/on, but no difference.

Rik

Do you have any P2P running?

Nope, just me browsing - spoke to Support today, but BT wont want to kno wif the download speed is "up there".

A test result from BBmax to discount a Speedtest.net issue

Date of Speed Test: 2009-09-14 19:13:45

Download Speed: 2296 kbps (287 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 70 kbps (8.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Rik

Sadly, BT aren't at all interested in upload speeds, that's why their tester doesn't check them. That said, they shouldn't affect your browsing experience unless they're really dire.

Are you relying only on speedtest sites to measure upload speed?

As an experiment, I just conducted tests at speedtest.bbmax.co.uk, thinkbroadband.com, speedtest.net and speed.io. Upload speeds were shown as 215kbps, 378kbps, 210kbps, 414kbps respectively. However, a large 10mb upload sent by email, and a 15mb one uploaded to my FTP server, both measured using Netmeter, showed uploads are running at full speed for the entire duration of the upload. It's likely that the test sites are the problem, not your connection.

Rik

That's true, Dopamine, the Namesco site doesn't seem to be able to measure WBC upload speeds accurately in my experience, though email sends show it to match the sync speed reasonably closely.

Oh Dear

Seems I've hit a new low.  Probably everaged 500kbps over the weekend.  Support have been contacted though and initial tests that I ran over the weekend have been sent.

Rik

That's the site I find least accurate for uploads, Vit. Try uploading a file to your webspace and time it, or try http://www.speedtest.net/, I've just done this test on a 3.5M WBC profile, with a 762k u/s sync. DO USE the Maidenhead server, not London.

Sebby

Are you able to try the BT speed test?

vitriol

James emailed me this morning and has spoken to BT.  Apparently the VP that I connect to at the exchange has been congested for some time.  They're going to move me to an uncongested one.

Thanks James  :thumb:

So hopefully things will improve over the next couple of days.
