Still bad  :(

James informs me that BT will not move me to another VP as my speeds "are at an acceptable level."  They're certainly not acceptable to me.

I have contacted James again for further advice.

Simon

Yup, BT's definition of 'acceptable' leaves a lot to be desired.

Can you try a BT test, Vit, it is working again now.

Now this is more like it.  Just have to see if it holds up.  Usually after 9pm things take a big nosedive.

Nice to see BT think 600k is acceptable for you.  :eyebrow:

Im not really one to complain unless I have to.  The past two weeks have been the worst my internet has ever been.  Poor James at IDNet must dread coming into work as I've been sending him quite a few mails of present.

As for BT's acceptable performance slider.  It needs to be re done.  For my line stats and profile I think accepatable is 4000 - 6000 kbps.

Now lets hope that things hold up.  I doubt it seeing as BT have admitted to James that the VP I link into is congested.  Getting them to do something about it though is a whole new ball game.

Sadly I'm going on holiday tomorrow so won't be able to check it.

vitriol

well it was good while it lasted.

rireed3

This is exactly the problem that IDNet escalated and (at length) got fixed last month for about 20 of us -- I was one of the beneficiaries, so I have seen these same ridiculous numbers for weeks in August.  Remember "dimensioning"?

If this got fixed for us, why won't they fix it for vitriol?  The same people can't be communicating between BT and IDNet.  Or is the excuse that vitriol is on Max rather than WBC?

Richard

Gary

Must admit things do seem better now at least for me on Max, my latest test was as follows

Yes, I am.

A while back I was achieving speeds of 13000 on an IP profile of 15000. Since return from holiday on 22 Sep my speed has consistently been 2200 ish.
This morning's speed test is an example.

James at IDnet suggests BT are working on it!!!!

Previously I ws with Nildram on ADSL and achieved 5Mbps consistently.

I believe he is, Richard, and BT haven't fully fixed it on WBC yet - they've had to completely reconfigure the network in the past two weeks as they found they'd made a very basic mistake in the setup which was causing the 'under-dimensioning'. In addition, MSAN firmwares are being updated and DLM has been significantly refined for WBC. There is now an official target margin of 3db, and I speak from personal experience, which is being used on some longer lines to improve speeds.

For those on Max, the signs are that BT are trying to avoid any further investment, instead they are pushing ahead as quickly as possible with the WBC rollout, for which they have promised price cuts in January - I get the sense that LLU is finally beginning to dent their profits. Of course, they haven't seen fit to tell ISPs yet, they've just issued a press release.  :eyebrow:

Yes, I am.

See my post above, Joe. Things are being resolved, just not as quickly as everyone would like. However, with BT Retail launching WBC today, I'd expect that every resource available will be thrown at the problem.

Devil's bargain:  take a chance on the new service or switch to LLU, if you can.

I would have thought that Ofcom were meant to have a say in such shenanigans

Vitriol, you may have left on holiday -- can you get LLU?

Richard

Rik

Ofcom and BT are like Ofgem and the power companies, Richard. :(

I remember reading some article a few weeks back about a bunch of companies banding together to try and redefine what 'broadband' meant in a technical sense... so they could provide a lesser service and still call it broadband  ::)
CompuServe 28.8k/33.6k 1994-1998, BT 56k 1998-2001, NTL Cable 512k 2001-2004, 2x F2S 1M 2004-2008, IDNet 8M 2008 - LLU 11M 2011

Rik

That would be a typical British approach, wouldn't it. "What's the minimum we can get away with?"  :shake:

Given there are many of us struggling to get a viable service on Max, I can only wonder what sort of reliability we will get with WBC.  Round here there is little in the way of LLU apart from TalkTalk and Orange, both of which I would be reluctant to touch with a bargepole, so effectively we're going to be screwed.

Rik

I am hopeful atm, Tac. I've seen some significant improvement in WBC since September 16, and I now get a 3800k throughput rather than the 2400k I had with Max. DLM has been massively refined from what I can observe and is much more responsive to changes in the line condition, good or bad.

And this has continued this morning.  Hooray!!

Speed test on speedtest.net however shows d'ld 64.59Mb/s (???), u'ld 0.69 Mb/s with a ping of 62ms. Why this huge difference? Incidentally, how do folks copy the speedtest picture to thier posts?

Rik

Can't explain the difference for sure. They are use Mbits rather than kbits, but the conversion doesn't work out. Speedtesters are often weird, we've been discussing the oddities that some report in the upload speed in another thread. Try the one on ThinkBroadband, it's usually pretty reliable. Completely ignore any ping times reported by a test site and do your own tests.

When you complete a test at speedtest.net, you are given the option to copy a direct link or one for a forum, select the latter (LH side) and paste into a post.

Thanks Rik.

Speedtest.net result still odd since max speed BT profile is 14000.

It's probably a bit confused. ;)
