ADSL2+

Moonshine

Good Morning all.

I hope someone can offer me some advice.  I am currently on the Home Max package (ADSL up to 8mbps).  However, I've noticed on the IDNet website the ADSL2+ package (yes, I'm slow on the uptake!), which seems to offer faster speeds, a higher download allowance per month for less money - meaning due to a higher download allowance, I could get away with opting for the Home Plus package instead??

Am I being naive in thinking that I would be stupid not to ask to transfer to ADSL2+?!  Are there any catches?  Why are the prices the same as for the ordinary ADSL packages, but with higher download allowances?!  Am I missing something here?!!  Have people experienced any problems on ADSL2+?

I am in Milton Keynes, if that is any help.  What I don't want to happen is to jeopardise my current connection, which has been without problem (touch wood) for a while now.  I am not good with sorting out connection problems, or speed problems, so feel that if by transferring over it may cause issues, I think I'd rather leave well alone (if it ain't broke, don't fix it attitude).

For someone who is afraid (very afraid!) of computers and the internet when they don't work, in netters' opinions here, do you think it is worth my while asking to be transferred to ADSL2+, or should I leave well alone??????!! ;D

I will check in again later, in the hope that someone may be able to offer me some sound advice.

Many thanks!

Moonshine. :)

Some people have experienced problems with moving to ADSL2 but a lot depends on your particular situation.  If you could let us have some statistics - SNR, attenuation and so on - someone will be able to give you better advice.  If you go to your router set up page you should be able to find the information form there.  It would also be useful to know the make and model of your router.

I would suggest you read through some of the posts in the following threads, Moonshine, many people have had problems when they've switched to ADSL2+. I would think long and hard before switching as this service isn't very robust at the moment and once you have switched it appears there is no going back, if you want to go back to Max 8Mbs service BT just limit the ADSL2+ to behave like the Max up to 8mbs service.

BT's ADSL2 is in the teething stage from what I've seen. If you don't need more speed, I'd give it a while, but this is pure opinion.

And one I would agree with, Esh.

From what I have read on here I would give it a while yet before you actually take the plunge, especially as things are running smoothly with your current set up ;)

Moonshine

Thank you very much everyone.

That is most helpful.  I will certainly have a read over the issues other people have experienced, and will not plunge into it head first. :)

It is a bit of a curate's egg right now, but I believe it will get better over the next 1-3 months. Depending on your line stats, it may be worth the move, even on my 57db line, I've gained 1M in profile, right now, 1.5M. I've had two periods of poor throughput lasting a few days each, but generally it's been OK.
