Hi

I've just joined IDNet - hi :) (Supermax)

I have a domain already registered with Fasthosts & have set it up to make use of the email forwarding to my new idnet email address.

However, this means I have to put my domain email address in the reply-to in outlook and recipients still see my idnet email in the header, for example:

from My Name <myemail@idnet.com>
reply-tomyname@mydomain.com
to My Name <recipient@gmail.com>
date 25 September 2009 21:13
subjectTest
mailed-byidnet.com

Is there any way to point my domain directly at the idnet mail servers so I don't have to do the reply-to trick or would that need moving the whole domain to idnet?

There's an option to change the Email DNS (MX record) to a new ip address in the Fasthosts control panel, but I don't know much about this...

Hi  :welc: :karma:
I  think you will get a more complete answer from others, what I will say as far as I am aware is that iDNET will allow you to use any or multiple SMTP server(s) for different email addresses this I believe is possible from within Outlook.

Hi Spiny,  :welc:  :karma:

Are you downloading your 'myname@mydomain.com' emails via Outlook, or another email client?  If so, is there any point in forwarding them to your IDNet email address?  You can set up your domain emails to send and receive via IDNet's servers, as Steve has said.  :)

Yeah, Outlook. & I've done as you've said which works fine, it's just that the some email recipients see the from address as the idnet one, even though the reply address is my domain.

From what I can see there's several posts on the internet on using google apps mail with fastshosts using zoneedit, so I didn't know if I needed to do something like that.

If I find out if it's possible, I'll post back here.

Cheers!

Steve

Don't you have the option in Outlook to choose (apart from the default) who the email is from? Sorry on a Mac and the memories of Outlook are a bit vague.Certainly within Mail on the Mac and if I recall Thunderbird was the same, the "from" email address could be chosen. The long headers if you use another SMTP server will not show idnet's presence

My thought would be to use outlook to puck up your emails directly from fasthosts rather than forwarding them to Idnet. Assuming that is possible of course!

That way, your Idnet address will never be part of the equation.

I agree. I have my own domains with email (through godaddy.com) and don't go anywhere near IDNet's servers with it. Configure your mail client to talk directly to Fasthosts.

Fasthost email plans have roaming SMTP provision, so you can send email direct from your domain too.

Roaming SMTP (Outgoing mail server)
Fasthosts Advanced and Exchange mailboxes include roaming SMTP, enabling you to send mail using email software on your PC, from wherever you're accessing the internet.

With many email providers, you need to use your broadband provider's outgoing mail servers, but with Fasthosts you're not tied to your ISP. For example, if you use email software on a laptop (e.g. Outlook), you'll be able to send emails using different broadband connections.

Hi Spiny and welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

As others have said, you should be able to keep the two sets of accounts completely separate. All you need to is set up each one to use the appropriate SMTP service, often through the use of an authenticated SMTP server. I send and receive from my domain, idnet.com, GMail etc completely independently of each other.

I'd agree with everybody else.  Stop the forwarding lark and simply download your mail from the Fasthost servers.  You'll need to change the Pop server name in Outlook.  You can still use IDNet's SMTP server for outgoing mail so no need to change that setting unless you want to.
