Hello

I have emailed this directly to idnet but thought I would post it here to see if anyone has had a similar issue or knows how to resolve mine. Its a bit long but better to have too much info than not enough !
I won't be back home until this evening so if you ask me to check X,Y or Z I won't be able to until later.
Feel free to email me directly at alex dot kaye at gmail dot com
Cheers

I came home yesterday on Thursday evening, switched on my laptop ( connected to the speedtouch modem/router that I purchased from you via an ethernet cable ) and for whatever reason the computer couldn't connect to the internet. The little icon that appears in the bottom left hand corner of two little monitors had a ' X ' over it.

This is the first time that this has happened in however many months I've been with you.

I restarted the machine but the same thing happened.

I tried to login to the modem/router but it prompted me for a username and password and since i haven't logged in to it in 6 months or so I've completely forgotten what it is ( its NOT u/n ' Administrator ' p/w ' loaded ' ).

I then turned off the modem via the switch at the back and turned it back on.

This rectified the problem and I can now browse the web as i did before.

HOWEVER one problem that I am now experiancing is that when downloading using a program via Bittorent (  dance music which I should have grown out of by now ) i cannot 'connect' properly ( see attached screenshots ). The light icon should be green which it previously did within a matter of seconds.

The Windows firewall is off, and the norton firewall is off and nothing has changed on the machine since the night before when everything was working perfectly.

Any idea's ?

Rik

Welcome to the forum. :)

The first thing I'd suggest you do is to change the ethernet cable. The red X means that the machine was not detecting the connection to the router. This could well be a cable fault (the cheapest fix), or it could be a fault with your network interface on the computer, the router or an issue with networking software in Windows having become corrupted.

I'd start with the cable, then see if you can borrow a router from someone to eliminate that. From the start button, select run and type CMD, then press enter. In the ensuing window, type ipconfig /all, then right click on the title bar, select edit > select all, then repeat and select copy. Paste the results back here.

hi - thanks for the reply

i'm not sure whether the ethernet cable is the issue since the connectivity issue was resolved once i restarted the modem ( by turning it off via the switch at the back and then back ). I can now connect and browse the web with no problems.

My issue is now a) how on earth do i connect to my modem when i have no idea of the username and password and b) any ideas why the torrent software might not be connecting properly ? Could it be linked to restarting the modem. Thats the only thing that has changed from the night before when it was running smoothly.

I've attached the screenshot and i'll do another post with the screenshot from the modem.

Thanks
Alex

Hi Alex

The cable may have caused the router or PC interface to become unstable, hence in this sort of situation, I recommend changing it where possible, it's one of the easiest things to eliminate.

Default user name for Speedtouch routers is Administrator with a blank password, though it may have been set up differently by IDNet, in which case you'd have to give them a call.

As to torrents, I'm afraid I don't use them, so can offer little practical advice. :( It could be linked to re-starting the router, though I wouldn't have expected your settings to change unless you did a factory reset (paper clip in a hole somewhere).

It's possible, I suppose, that a power glitch upset the router and it needs to be hard reset, but again I'd suggest you give IDNet a call, or email.

Hopefully, someone else who uses torrents will be along shortly and may be able to offer you more advice in that respect.

ok - i'll change the cable tonight - i have a spare at home. you never know. I can't really see that the turning off and back on of the modem would have affected it either.

I've emailed idnet so will wait for a response.

Thanks again

Rik

They do answer the phone quickly, so if you want a quick answer...

I am a complete novice when it comes to things like 'DNS'.

But I think it was just a case of your router forgetting your laptop.  Re-booting the router was the correct thing to do, as it then gave it/picked-up a new (IP ??) number.

Mo, DNS servers simply take the internet address in words and convert it the ip address. Problems sometimes occur if a company changes ip address but you try to access the website before the DNS server has been updated. When this happens the server still looks for the old ip address which then causes the error.
DHCP servers allocate the ip to computers connecting to the network. I can't see why either would upset torrents unless port forwarding (for the torrent client) was set up on the router for the previous ip address allocated which could now be different to the ip allocted when the router was rebooted. This is a long shot though because each time the laptop established a network connection there is the chance it would be allocated a different ip and as such, Spyro most likely would have had problems with torrents before.

spyro, did you contact cs at all and if so did you get your problem sorted? If you did could you let us know what it was please!

i hope this all helps!

Thank you for the clarification Lance.

What prompted my post was that recently my son gave me a new(er) computer.  While setting it up I had cause to swop between the two desktops.  Each time I fired up I found I had to re-boot my D-Link DSL524T router in order to find web-pages, even though it appeared from the LEDs that everything was connected OK.
It was no problem, just a nuisance.  Luckily I have a good, solid, connection (8128/448).
So I thought it may have been the same for Spyro.

Basically i think the issue at least with Bittorrent was that the ports i was using aren't using working anymore. I downloaded and installed Azerus (sp?) which finds a good port itself so it seems to be wokring ok now.

I still can't log in to the router, I've no idea what the username and password is. Not a major issue but just a nuisance.

Thanks for the replies !

Rik

Spyro, try using your IDNet username and password with the router, if that doesn't work, try Administrator and your IDNet password.
