Drop in sync speed

Hope You can help

over the last couple of years my sync speed has slowly droped from a full 8m sync to anything between 5 -6m

Should i be getting a better sync speed than this or do you think this is right for the stats
The line is adsl standard

on another note our house is old and mutch of the wireing hasnt been replaced in a long time, and most of it is wired directly into the bt face plate. how mutch would it cost to get bt to seperate the extentions from the face plate

Hi Matt I am no expert on this someone will be with you soon I think its about £120 but Think is the word I would advise you to take this as a guide

Do you have an NTE5 master socket or one of the old style ones?

The connection speed has dropped as the SNR target margin has increased (from 6 to your current 13.8db), this is probably because your connection either has repeatedly lost sync or an excessively high transmission error rate.

There's a Kitz guide here, that details how to improve the internal wiring yourself. It requires an NT5E master socket though, which if you don't have, could cost anywhere from £25 to £125+ (if you want them to sort out all the internal wiring) for a BT Openreach engineer to install.

The easiest way to see if the internal wiring is to blame, is to unscrew the lower half of the NT5E master socket and plug your router (via a filter) into the test socket and see if the sync speed changes.

It is possible that the noise interference comes from your neighbours, in which case your options are limited. This could be from just the general noise introduced as more and more people use ADSL Broadband or from say a noisy Sky box hooked up to the phone line.

The other possibility is a physical fault in the line leading up to your property, you'd have to talk to your ADSL or voice provider for advice about an Openreach engineer visit, this which would incur a call out fee if they can't find a fault.
