Hi,

I've been with IDNet for a couple of weeks now, with a Netgear DG834v4. My connection has been extremely stable for the last 9 or 10 days, with no resync taking place.

I typed in "adslctl info --stats" in the telnet window to see if I was on interleave or fast mode, and it seems to be fast which is good as I hope to be playing Counterstrike again soon  :) and would prefer lower pings.

Anyway, I happened to notice some rather large error counts and number of error seconds... Are these normal? Sometimes I find some error seconds have happened during a 15 minute period when I wasn't even using the PC!

The log follows...

I have a high error count on my line, but it only connects around 2.4mb, the resent errors are the ones that need to be kept as low as possible.

Errors are nothing to worry about assuming your throughput is not being affected. Could you run a BT speed test?

jca74

Thanks for the replies!

On the BT speed test website, it says that data from the results of the test are automatically collated by BT, and that this might be acted upon.

Could BT change someone's profile/settings automatically based on the test, or would this only happen if the person concerned raised a problem with his ISP?

i.e. Is it "safe" to use the BT speed test as an experiment?

Thanks,
JC

Glenn

JC, I don't know, if you give support a call, I'm sure that they could clarify the issue.

I don't think BT 'act' upon anything without being prodded with a large stick, so I would think you'd be pretty safe, JC, and we all use it, but by all means, check it out with IDNet, if you're at all concerned.

And what Glenn said.  :)
Simon.

Hi, here are the results from the BT speedtest website. Looks weird, with 5565 exceeding the IP profile of 5000. (Not possible according to the BT FAQ!) The alternative "www.speedtest.net" site gives me a download of about  4.83Mb/s which seems more consistent with an IP profile of 5000. Is the 5565 value the "throughput" that Sebby referred to?

Also, if anyone could point me in the direction of a link that explains what CRC, HEC, RS, RSCorr, RSUncorr, SF etc mean in the Netgear log of my first post, I would be grateful.

Thanks,
JC

===========================================================

Download speedachieved during the test was - 5565 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :5938 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 933 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 5000 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 20.18:21.76:58.06 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.

The results of this test will vary depending on the way your ISP has decided to use these traffic classes.

Lance

Hi Jc.

It is indeed the throughput which Sebby mentioned. It is, as you say, not possible to acheive a higher throughput than profile, but it's unusual for the BT test to give a duff result.

I'm afraid I can't help  with the errors, as try see quite a bit different to those my router gives!
