There will be no dedicated servers for the pc, confirmed on bash and slash live cast with 402. That sucks for pc players. Gonna be listen servers through iw net

• IW has control of the game

• Semi-capable password servers
• Semi-capable ad-hoc servers
• Competitive play is dead
• MW2 mods would not be possible

Myst

There's gonna be a lot of p***ed off PC players about.

Also a lot of servers not going to be rented on the back of this!
I have had a dedi box since the original came out, will be looking again at this i think, or adding other content to what we have instead

You could see the charged content thing coming a mile off when Windows Live started supporting PC games, previously only Xbox Live based, and most are under Steam.

There is an on-line petition that can be signed, (whether it does much good of course)

I am aghast at this.  I just don't understand their thinking.

I used to play CoD on the PC but i only play it on the xbox now. I've still got all the older CoD's for the PC.

Dedicated servers for PC's should be left in imo. Its going to kill the LAN type comps. But i dont think IW care or will listen.

Lance

I used to play a lot of the various MoH titles (seriously, a lot!) and moved on to CoD and CoD2 later at which time I got a life!

I can't believe that the dedicated servers are being left out, but can't help but wonder if some chargable product will cone along later down the line.

or are they doing this for the future of gaming? People who play on the consoles can also go againts pc players  ???

Niall

They've obviously been planning this for years. You only have to look at the games brought out in the last year to see that they've all got a system based around how consoles run FPS games. While I think there is a very strong market for consoles, I don't agree that they should blatantly alienate the PC gamer. It's irony if nothing else.

I don't really play many games anymore, other than RTS games, but I did play FPS games until my eyes bled at one point! I used to run my own servers, was in two clans helping them admin those and also was the dep head admin for Jolt CS too.

It all started going down the pan with more and more people using cheats, and then when console FPS games were getting a release first, or had their own version of a game released that the PC never saw. Then you had the idea of in game advertising, gamespy arcade, and the final nail in the coffin was Gears of war. That massively over rated game with nice graphics on a console made a lot of mugs play on consoles instead. When the companies saw the amount of teens (mainly) that wanted to play FPS on consoles you saw games on the PC that only had better graphics but the same interfaces that smacked of console layouts.

Personally I think you're insane if you play an FPS game on a console. The joypad is not for FPS. For shame!

Anyway, stuff, rant, whine, etc. So ner.

Its the fact you have to get used to it. when i got an xbox 360 with CoD 4, i hated it, i even went back to the PC version for a while.. but i gave the console another go and found it fun after getting used to aiming again.

I would never play on a console other than for fun, if i wanted to play a FPS in a competition, PC wins everytime. You will never beat a keyboard and mouse for a FPS (i used to be sniper in most games, something that is alot harder to do on a console)

That reminds me. I must find my CoD4 PC version to install after this reformat.

What i think IW should do.. delay the game for abit (more) (its delayed for PC already right?) give it dedicated servers and match making, best of both worlds..

vitriol

pretty much agree with everything already said.

I use my PC for FPS games, I wouldnt even try to play a FPS on the Xbox.

Way to go IW I for one will not buy your game.  I dont want to play in your ******* multiplayer environment.

As much as I want to play the single player game, this will have ruined the long term enjoyment of this game for me.  I am seriously considering cancelling the pre-order that I have for it.

Dedicated servers have been a part of FPS on-line play for many years.  I've played recently hosted servers, (Call of Juarez - Bound in blood)  A good game whose long term use is spoilt by an incomplete on-line capability.  They destroy the camaraderie that is built playing a game as part of a team.  Why dumb down just because consol players cant have dedicated servers?

Consoles could have dedicated servers if they were willing to put some time into doing it for consoles.

MS has or will be releasing a program where you can run dedicated servers on your home machine for some console games i've heard.

Ok let me get this right, i have been looking forward to mw2 for ages now, have it pr-ordered for the pc, does this mean there will be no muliplayer available? what are dedicated servers anyway, i have cod4 and 5 which i play everyday, i will be gutted if theres no multiplayer :eek4:

It means that you can play multiplayer on-line but you dont get to pick on which server you want to play.  You will be "matched" against similarly ranked players every time you go on-line by the master server host.

In CoD4 and CoD5, you will see a server list and you can pick which one you want to play on.  If you like it, you can have it as a favourite and go back to it time and again.  You wont have that with dedicated servers.  There will be no chance of making on-line battle friends.

For clans who want to play competative or freindly matches against each other, this is also no longer an option.  Infinity Ward have killed the on-line community for this particular game by taking this action

If The World Didnt Suck, We'd all Fall Off

Barndog

That is really sad to hear, i will be cancelling my order for sure, also will players not be able to pick a game type like teamdeath match etc.?

Supanova

You will be able to enter your preferences for the server e.g. mode - team deathmatch, difficulty - hardcore.

To be honest the matchmaking system doesn't bother me toooooooo much as long as I can define the maximum number of players on the server (I hate playing with more than about 16).

My MASSIVE gripe about IWnet is the fact that mods are no longer going to be possible. I play Promod in CoD4, a competitive mod that removes stupid weapons like semi-automatic sniper rifles, gives everyone the same perks (SP & Bandoleer) and makes some balancing changes to allow for league play. If CoD4MW2 does not have such a mode, then competitive play will simply not be possible
"Privacy is dead, deal with it" - CEO Sun MicroSystems

Barndog

Thanks Supanova, ermmm i might just go ahead and get it anyway now, as long as your able to pick what mode you want to play in, will you still be able to pick and choose your favourite weapon

Wags

Well, I cancelled my pre-order for the game when I heard the news and all the members of my COD Clan did the same. Infact, everyone I 'know' from various clans have cancelled. We host several COD4 servers, a COD 2 server and COD WAW server. MW2 is not going to be a clan game or game for those not in clans, but who like to choose the server they play on or like the way a server is run, mods etc. When I signed the petition (for what it is worth) there were 3700 sigs, now there are over 168,000..! :eek4:

I am looking forward to Battlefield. Bad Company 2 which comes out in March 2010. The developer DICE has made the most of the debacle with MW2 and have gone out of their way to promise full support for dedicated servers and PC only content e.g. you can go prone on the PC but not consoles. :thumb:

Myst

Same with our lot wags; like you we run a dedi running 4/waw as well as other stuff certainly be looking to fill the space with other games  - poss l4d2 when it comes out, going off the popularity of the 1st one. Just hope they improve the server browser on it though as thats its weakest issue

For £25 I reckon it will be worth the money. I'v paid as much for games I have played for a few days and got bored of before and I have no doubt that the quality of the gameplay for MW2 will be excellent if not a little arcadey.

Also it has a steam platform, and I have yet to see a steam platform game that has not been modded into a completely different game. The PC gamers are always smarter than the developers, the developers at IW seem to have caught a bad case of the stupid from their console playing community. How hard can it be?  ;D

I received my copy on the 9th November from coolshop.co.uk (early because of the anticipated PO strike action). I soon realized that it uses the STEAM platform which I did not want at all, as I have never played an online game in my life and never will, but unfortunately there is no other way to play the game offline without installing STEAM. I would never have bought it had I known beforehand.

I then then tried to install it and kept getting errors and that was just trying to install the STEAM bit. Thinking that it might be an error on the DVD, I downloaded the STEAM installer from their site, but with the same problem, but a different error message, saying that I was not connected to the internet. I then realized that it was probably my new Billion router that was blocking it, and once I turned off the firewall it then started to install, but came to an abrupt halt after entering the license number as it was not the 10th (release date), I have never come across this before in a game.

As I was still up around midnight midnight, I decided to try again with my Firewall set to low (instead of medium) and low and behold it installed, which was quite a long install over 11Gb. I then had a little play then went to bed. The following day I gave it the full treatment and I was very impressed with the graphics and by 11:30pm, I had finished it (a total of 10hrs playing time). As I am not an avid gamer, I thought the game was too easy easy (I did play on Regular) and far too short, so I think an avid gamer will not be impressed by this. Most games take me quite a time spread over several days sometimes weeks.

Colin

PS
Does anyone know what ports need to be enabled for STEAM, in order for me to keep my Firewall settings on Medium (default), rather than keep switching to low or turning it off altogether.

If you like RPG games, get Dragons age origins. It's basically a posh version of Neverwinter Nights and it's what the second game should have been. Voice over acting for all non player characters, which is really good and what's more it's been estimated that there is about 90 hours play, per character. You can also play each character as good, neutral or evil as with most RPGs so that's 270 hours of play for one character. There are 6 classes too so as you can see it will last you a hell of a long time!

I'm currently running around with a mage and all my extra shiny stuff as I paid £40 for the collectors edition because I'm a massive nerd! Ni!

i think what is annoying me the most about mw2 that there are already people using aim bots   :rant2:

Supanova

I thought that campaign was excellent. It was exciting, interesting and had a great plot with twists I didn't see coming. It took me 5hrs to complete but I don't normally like single player games so the shortness of it didn't bother me.

The only play would be fantastic if we had dedicated servers, control and the ability to mod but as it is...the online community isn't going to last very long. I give it 6 months if that before PC gamers move on. CoD4 was something special -CoD6 isn't.

The P2P hosting sucks causing lag and when the host leaves there is a 10 second or so pause while another host is found (yes...in the middle of the fricking game). There is a MASSIVE lack of control for players - I don't think you can even choose which map you want. The games are too short for me usually lasting under 10 minutes. If there is a hacker in your game you cannot kick him because there are no servers.

All they had to do was give us dedicated servers to solve everything and produce a brilliant multiplayer game. As it is, they have completely ***** it and lost the huge respect I previously had for them as game developers.

One can only hope.  Meanwhile, I'm still resisting buying it, (just)...

Quote"Well it turns out that developers at Infinity Ward didn't have any time for PC title so they simply disabled the dedicated server feature. As it was developed on the same improved engine Call of Duty 4 was developed on, so it presumably had the same features + few improved if any.
So the console and dedicated servers option was there, but infinity ward blocked it, may be because they simply were too lazy to completely eliminate these features."

There are other similar websites with the news and loads of different groups creating different types of servers - some of them sensible.

Still awaiting a response from IW about it.

Problem is...it's an EA game developed again by DICE. It's going to have the same  problem all the previous BF's have had - it gets 1 patch and then it is left to die a buggy abused death. EA don't give a sh*t about a game once they have extracted your cash from your wallet.

I have to agree with you though, BFBC2 does look good and they have explicitly said there will be dedicated servers and mod-packs. IMO cod6 has opened the door to other companies in search of the big-bucks for competitive PC FPS gaming thanks to the fantastic shitness of CoD6 multiplayer.
