How will I know that my new service is connected

Hi

I ordered a service from IDNET this week. I am using my own equipment so don't have to wait on a delivery. I have had a confirmation email stating when it will be connected "by." Does this ever happen before this deadline and if so how will I know other than by trying that the line has been "hooked up?"

TIA

If you have an established ADSL connection then your best bet is to try entering the details into your equipment and keep trying to establish a connection from the day before it is due and continuing until there is a connection.

I was told that mine would go live by 6pm on such and such a date, I ended up getting a conformation email at 7 that morning and was in without a hitch. Hope your switch over is as smooth.
Welcome aboard when it happens Neilinut.

Hi

The line has not had adsl on before. So I am currently having to work at places I can take my laptop and use wireless. I'll just set my router up and try occasionally when I am home I guess. Thanks for the replies.

Hi Neil

Set up the router and wait for the DSL sync light to go solid green (with most makes). When you see that, your line has been activated and you can proceed to complete the router setup.

Thanks, Rikbean.

Anyone able to tell me what state the adsl link light would be in normally on an unactivated line? Currently I have no light showing with everything connected. As I have never plugged this unit into an unactivated line before I am unsure if this might mean that the cable from filter to "ADSL" on the router  is faulty. I have not used the router for a year or two having been on cable and then out of the country.
It is a usrobotics sureconnect wireless router. I can't seem to see anything on its data sheet as to say what should happen in this use case.

TIA

Neil

Normally, if the line is not activated, the light will flash. The moment it turns steady, your line is up and running.

All up and running - 2 days early! very very pleased have had very bad turn-arounds from isps in the past.

The cable turned out to be good. It appears that the link light does remain inactive on this router when there is no adsl signal on the line. I would have expected something different to distinguish between a physical sense connection and an actual signal "handshake" but there you go.

Welcome to our club. Things happen around here 'as promised', and we tend to take it for granted after a while, but a new presence reminds us of why we are so loyal to IDNet, thank you for that. :)

Most routers I've used only signal the DSL sync, not whether you are logged in, generally that's found in the browser interface. I suppose that, once you've established a connection, you don't really need to be reminded, though I confess I'd quite like a sync and a PPP light myself. Guess we'll just have to design our own router!

If IDNet made routers...

...They'd probably be the best routers in the world!

A wonderful line. Why didn't I think of it? :)
