Windows 7 error

I have tried to update my laptop but installation fails with error 0x80070570. If this persists I may have to do a full install , ant thoughts.

did you do a in place upgrade? Its generally better to do a clean install if possible.

I'm thinking I hope you've backed up!

Haven't got mine yet, but I also hope to be able to do an 'upgrade' install on my laptop.

Although, I do agree with Gary that a clean install is usually better. I'm just hoping to get away with being lazy.

I hoping to plug my new Mac in next week or the week after if all goes well

I have a buyer for the laptop so mission is go....well I still need Justina's blessing on what the new Macs look like size wise, but she lets me deal with technology. If I were you Simon I would do a clean install, it will be faster and and give less issues over the course of time. It does not take that long.

I have tried both update and custom which should overwrite Vista, both failed with the same error

Have you tried using boot and nuke on the hard drives, that way they are well and truly blank before an install Den. it can be downloaded here http://www.dban.org/download

I probably will do a clean install, Gary. It's just the thought of it that puts me off. Like many of us, I'm very much in the 'plug in and play' mindset these days.

I thought 7 only liked a clean install. But maybe my information is out of date.

I understand that Simon, the idea of installing Windows from the ground up or any OS is not my idea of fun any more, plug and play is best. Funny to think two years ago I was happy to do it, now I shudder at the idea.

Windows 7 takes around 30 minutes to install, I haven't found a peice of hardware in my house it hasn't had a driver for yet.

Thats good, I must admit I would never install a windows release myself anyway, I always wait to see how it pans out, and wait for SP1 to get the bugs sorted out with any Windows install I have done..

Are you installing 64bit?

People who are getting this error are finding out theres a problem with there RAM. But say 32bit version installs ok.

Try downloading MEMTEST86 and checking your memory for any errors.

I ended up putting the Home Premier version on the desktop as to put the update vista home to the Professional version required a clean install and that would have been to much hassle. I will reformat the drive on my laptop as it will not let me install or update and keeps reporting files missing and refusing to complete, odd as that is the computer that let me install Vista SP2.
I did not realise that you can not update Vista home Premier to Windows 7 Professional.
When it was installed it told me to update Kaspersky which I did then Kaspersky said there was a newer version (even though the web site claimed I was loading the latest) and then it refused to recognise my registration and said I was out of date (I had about 150 days left on 3 machines, but I had uninstalled it on my laptop) , so I have had to register as a trial version until I can sort it out

Mine arrived today, by City Link, and, of course, I wasn't in, so I've now got to make a 30 mile round trip to get it. Why the hell couldn't they have just posted it? I wouldn't have cared if it was a day or two late.

It loaded this morning in about half the time that Vista would. I like the task bar at the bottom of the screen and have already pinned my most used programs there.

Just remember that if you are running Vista Premier you can update to W7 premier without having to reinstall everything but if you move up a level it has to be a clean installation

I always re-install, it give the OS a refresh, rather than taking the rubbish that you have accumulated with it to the new OS
