If i have auto update 'ON' and set to d/l once a week @ 1900 hrs, why is it that the yellow shield icon appears EVERY time I switch the 'puter on and just sits there for 10+ mins at a time slowing the whole system to a crawl.  (Reports that it's d/l updatates but it's not).
I've reverted to switching off auto updates and putting up with the nag box.
I've noticed that I can't even go on line if the yellow peril is displaying.

It shouldn't be having that big an impact, but it depends on how responsive the MS servers are, which is often 'not'. :(

Personally, I have auto-updates disabled, and have the security centre set to not nag me. I get an email from MS when there are updates available, and have a mental calendar that gets me to check every second Tuesday (usually Wednesday here) of the month.

Ah, just found the 'stop nagging' thingy.  Many thanks Rik.

I hate being nagged by Bill Gates! Glad to help. :)

I don't know why is seems to be running every time you login but I can have a stab at why it takes so long. If you are using the "Microsoft Update" Service as opposed to the "Microsoft Windows Update" Service then it seems to take much longer to check. It looks for updates to MS Office and lot's of other MS products. I've just done a manual test using Internet Explorer and the difference in time is very noticeable.

You can check to see if you have your pc set for Microsoft Updates by running Internet Explorer and Select "Windows Update" from the Tools Menu. If you are on the Windows Update then you will get a "Welcome to Windows Update" banner. If you are on the, much slower, Microsoft Update you will get "Welcome to Microsoft Update". You can switch back to just the Windows update by clicking on the "Change Settings" Link in the left hand sidebar, then Click "Disable Microsoft Update" and apply. This will switch you back to normal Windows only updates.

Hopefully this will speed up the check for you. It would be a good idea to check for Office updates once a month after "Patch Tuesday" to make sure you are still keeping up to date.

Rob.

Tks Rob. I used to do win update, back in the days when I had 2+ braincells left but had forgotten all about it.  Things running fine now.

If you are running Windows Defender, it shows the yellow shield when it updates its anti-spyware definitions then disappears automagically!  :)
