Hi everyone. I am about to invest in a laptop with Windows 7. At the moment I am using a desktop PC (windows XP), which has low memory (40GB) but which has served me well for good couple of years. With children growing up and requiring more storage, I'm looking for a replacement. The question that bothers me though is to do with my NETGEAR router (DG834G V3). On my desktop PC I have a  My Router log in icon, which gives me access to the router settings. If I was to use a wireless laptop (my PC is not wireless) how easy would it be to transfer the settings so that I have access to the router settings from my new laptop? Is this something I might be able to do myself or will I have to ask an expert? I'd like to add that I am thinking of completely getting rid of the PC and making the new laptop my main computer.  I know that transfering files or photos can be done using a memory stick. Will that work with the NETGEAR settings and if so how? Any comments/advice would be much appreciated.

Monk,

All you should need is your username and password for the router, then connect to it using a browser, via it's IP address, which I believe is 192.168.1.254 on a Netgear

If you've not disabled and/or setup encryption on your wireless router your new laptop will probably find your router and connect to the internet automatically. If you've disabled the wireless go http://192.168.0.1 in your current PC web browser this will open up the router setup pages username is admin & password is password if you've not changed them. Check the wifi settings enable if necessary , change the network name or SSID if wish to something familiar. Its then important to set up wireless encryption to stop the next door neighbours or the boys in the 106 parked outside using your network. The encryption protocol recommended is called WPA2 and you will be asked to input a password. Remember your wifi password as when your new laptop's wifi adaptor finds your SSID it will ask for a password input.

If you get stuck just plug an ethernet cable between your laptop and router,if your routers on and connected your laptop will too

Thank you all for your help. I'm glad I don't have to do anything I'm not familiar with!!
