What are the router stats like? Is your downstsream margin high.

Hi Steve

See below (from my Netgear status page): -

System Up Time 8 days 02:00:26
Port   Status   TxPkts   RxPkts   Collisions   Tx B/s   Rx B/s   Up Time
WAN   PPPoA   17312662   12936467   0   2361   1991    7 days 16:55:31
LAN   100M/Full   13574815   18206320   0   2821   3146    8 days 02:00:06
WLAN   54M   309055   31006   0   169   5    8 days 02:00:26

ADSL Link   Downstream   Upstream
Connection Speed   4288 kbps   448 kbps
Line Attenuation   46.5 db   23.5 db
Noise Margin   16.0 db   21 db

Cheers

Steve

I can see where your download speed's gone with a margin of 15, I don't know whether you've had it reset before but if you want it reset you'll have to ensure that you've eliminated all sources of internal noise affecting the adsl signal as I believe BT are not happy to keep resetting it. Possibly worth a go with routerstats if you've access to Windows to see how much the margin is changing during the day.

Thanks for the reply, Steve.  Apart from the router, I've only got one phone plugged in through the rest of the house.  I've tried to eliminate everything "noisy" from near the router (it's not powered from an extension plug, nor is there anything else electrical nearby).  I've not had my line profile reset before, but I just want to ensure I've done everything I can at my end before requesting that.  I should probably mention that the bellwire was disconnected from the router socket ages ago.  Anything else I should be checking before I log a call?

Thanks in advance

Rik

You want to disconnect the bellwire from all sockets, including the master. Check also for matched pairs at every socket on terminals 2 & 5, eg blue/white & white/blue. Those should be the only connected terminals.

Thanks Rik.  Just done that to the other 2 sockets in the house (one of which had the cordless phone base station plugged into it).  Stats now look like: -

System Up Time 03:03:25
Port   Status   TxPkts   RxPkts   Collisions   Tx B/s   Rx B/s   Up Time
WAN   PPPoA   681   610   0   790   570   00:04:51
LAN   100M/Full   173715   141115   0   11039   2700   03:03:04
WLAN   54M   1901   553   0   34   4   03:03:25

ADSL Link   Downstream   Upstream
Connection Speed   3776 kbps   448 kbps
Line Attenuation   46.5 db   23.5 db
Noise Margin   15.0 db   17 db

Noise seems to have dropped (and the lower connection speed was due to a router reset when I was checking the bellwire on that socket).

You now have a choice. (1) Wait 14 days for DLM to reset the margin automatically. (2) Ask IDNet if they can get it reset. Be aware that BT don't always agree to this and will generally only do it once. If further issues arise, the DLM is likely to put the target noise margin straight back to 15db and they won't intervene a second time.

Hmm, I think I'll probably wait for DLM to do its thing, and take it from there.

When you've had dial-up speeds for a couple of months, even 3.5MB seems like warp speed  :thumb:

I'll take your word for it, I've never had that speed  ;D

It takes 14 days with no re-syncs before it will budge, and then by 3db, ie to 12db. The process repeats until you either reach the 'normal' target of 6db or the stable point for your line. Each 3db is worth 5-700k of sync speed.
