That is my problem with them and to some extent a section of their users.

While we have Mac versions of some of the software I support it is not uniform at the moment and when you deliver yhe bad news they'll have to use Bootcampm Parallels or the like to run Windows you'd think I'd insulted them personally and they often launch into a tirade about how we are discriminating against them etc.

I just let them get it off their chest and explain I'm not involved in deciding support policy and my role exists to help where possible.
Just the one problem, Mitch.  ;)

Just for the record, my iTunes is now working again, after reinstalling F-Secure Internet Security.  It seems that several security apps have had issues with the latest version of iTunes.   I found a list on the Apple forums, but F-Secure wasn't actually one of them.  Of course, it's not Apple's fault.  Their solution is for users to wait until all the other affected software has been updated to be compatible with theirs.  And Apple wonder why they are accused of arrogance.  ::)
No different from Windows and many other pieces of software, Simon. Kaspersky broke loads of applications in its time, AV hooks go so deep they basically stuff any computer as soon as you install them it seems, and as they monitor in real time many apps get affected by them, or an update comes along and deletes part of the program you are using as it thinks its malware...

New Java update released for those that use it, on Lion Java is now hardened so after 35 days if not used the plugin is turned off (this can be turned on again in safari settings, also the new update searches for and removes known variants of the flashback Trojan, infection is now down to about 270,000 machines.

I'm still on Snow Leopard so this is more of a theoretical objection- I think I might well class that as a nuisance, I hate software that "looks after my best interests"

Unless it can be turned off, of course.

Considering in general how much of a security risk Java is, and that many people turn it off in their browsers unless they need it, I think its a great idea for those that need Java, I have yet to need to run a java applet in my browser, unless its BT and I wont install Java just for that. Software that may help stop you getting a Trojan I think is a good thing.  ::) I also believe Snow Leopard will not be supported after 10.8 is released in the summer, so to stay current you will probably have to update at some point to either Lion 10.7 or 10.8

I wouldn't argue with that, but turning something off just because I haven't used it for a while is, for me, going too far!

iOS 5.1.1 released, bug fixes for iPad and iPhone.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Simon

Just got it.  It downloaded and installed so quickly, I wasn't sure if it had worked, but iTunes reports the phone as being on 5.1.1, so guess it has.

I did another OTA update. It was fast but they are delta updates not full ones, Itunes downloads the full OS. It was only a small fix anyway from the reports about it. Nothing special for iPhones really. I hope iOS 6 is a big improvement or phones like the Samsung SGIII will look more tempting even if it its Android.

OTA update was about 46mb, iTunes version over 700mb.

Updates for SL and Lion, and Safari now at 5.1.7 with a check for old Flash players and direct route to update, Lion now at 10.7.4 bug fixes gfx updates and probably the last update before 10.8

Thanks a big security update for SL... 250-odd MB :o

All installed OK, thanks.

Seems older 24" iMacs are having issues with 10.7.4 as it modifies what screen resolution is available to tiny or huge. Looks like the new Mac range this year will sport retina screens  (maybe not iMacs but its possible) but 10.7.4 as added more High DPI elements as did 10.7.3 and its pretty much in the bag that 2012 iMacs will have USB 3 support with Ivy Bridge and the new chipset that now supports it without the need for third party controllers.

Thanks Gary I've not updated yet as it came out whilst I was away but I will bear it in mind before I update the iMac.

Many with some earlier iMacs ended up with a choice of 1920 x 1200 and 960 x 600 only, Steve. Its also caused problems with some Macbooks as well. Apple updates seem to be getting more and more buggy it seems  :( Saying that with Mountain Lion it all comes via the App Store as software update is being combined with that for 10.8

Lots of updates, iMovie, 1.01Gb, iPhoto 9.3, 599.65MB  (I believe for Lion 10.7.4 only as SL has been left out on this release) iTunes 10.6.3 at 170MB, Thunderbolt update software 1.2 so you can use it with a converter as a gigabit Ethernet  connector, Airport utility 6.1. So thats a nice slice of bandwidth  :P Beware the Thunderbolt update its causing some Macs to kernal panic and act a bit fruity in general.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Steve

Thanks Gary . I guess I won't need the thunderbolt update though.

Just thought I would mention it, Bill has two on his 27" doesn't he? I have one on my 21.5". I was looking at the price of a top spec Mac book Pro, £3000 + saying that a fully decked out Mac Pro with 4 512mb SSD's is £11k and it still has USB 2.0
