Just thought I would mention it, Bill has two on his 27" doesn't he?

Not that he's aware of :P

According to Wiki, Thunderbolt was introduced in Feb 2011 on the MacBook Pro, and my machines pre-date that.

It didn't show in the available (Snow Leopard) updates either.

Sorry bill, I though you bought a new iMac 27" last year. Well you missed a whole bunch of trouble as the update was only meant for macbooks and the new silly priced retina jobby which have no ethernet ports, so iMacs etc crashed got stuck in loops etc, it cause merry hell. Apple really are not on the ball with updates lately. Seems 'i' devices are more important than desktops  :eyebrow: My imac was August 2011 so has a thunderbolt port.

I bought the 27" iMac the previous year (2010), time flies... we're both a year older than you thought we were :P

Re the updates etc, I must admit that I've yet to see anything to persuade me that moving from SL to Lion would have been a good idea...

I remember when  my biggest memory car was around 64mb. :P
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

Java update (for Snow Leopard only afaik):

QuoteJava for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 9 delivers improved security, reliability, and compatibility by updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_33.

This update configures web browsers to not automatically run Java applets. Java applets may be re-enabled by clicking the region labeled "Inactive plug-in" on a web page. If no applets have been run for an extended period of time, the Java web plug-in will deactivate.

Same for Lion, not that I have java installed. Saying that next month its going to be Mountain Lion. Update looks like it will be very cheap, for both SL and Lion

£13.99 and I think that includes updating any Macs you own, sounds like a good deal to me

I do wonder about the future of the desktop Mac though. The Mac pro is said to be getting updates in 2013, the small bump it got this week is old tech, in fact you are paying full price for what two-three year old hardware really, and still with USB 2. The iMac has not been updated in 400 days now, so Apples profit margin must be huge off each sale as that tech is old, forget about Apple tax. It does come to mind that they want people to use laptops, iPads and iPhones and leave the desktop behind maybe  :-\  Even the new Retina Mac has a relatively small Flash drive really not suitable for professional usage and at a huge price and many people still dont trust the reliance on the iCloud world that Apple want us to use. Apple have a way of pushing people where they want them and I'm still unsure of the direction, and future now with Cook in charge.

Agreed... I'm having some thoughts about looking for a version of Linux that will run on iMac hardware.

But tbh I can't see the desktop disappearing completely, though it might well go to a niche market. Some applications (especially video processing of any serious sort) demand big screens, fast processors. huge HDDs and vast amounts of RAM... rather defeats the object to put that lot into a laptop :dunno:

I agree bill, I guess thats why it was said the Mac Pro would get a proper update in 2013, right now though if I needed a new machine with that much power, well it woulkd not be a Mac Pro sadly. To much money for very old tech, which will only drive professionals away I would imagine who want the latest Ivy Bridge Zeons with USB3 and thunderbolt.  :-\
