Messy morning

My main machine wouldn't fire up this morning, reaching the 'loading personal settings' screen then re-booting. I tried a 'last known good' boot, with no success, then tried safe mode which also failed - a BSOD I didn't get a chance to read, and off it went again. So, I pulled out the trusty Acronis backup, restored and all is well again. The only thing I did yesterday was to install some Windows security updates, but the machine had re-booted successfully after that, so I'm left puzzling.

Anyone else had any issues?

Glad that your backup worked, Rik. That reminds me that I should make one, I've been neglecting to do it for a while.

In Vista I had a built in imaging tool, (Ultimate) but with the Mac I have Time machine which comes with the machine, its works over Firewire, USB or WIFI and takes incremental images every hour, no having to remember it, which is great it just runs in the background on a LaCie 500Gb HD, I will probably need to get a bigger one at a point as I fill the machine up, its got a 1TB hard drive. For now the LaCie works fine, its simple and works (had a play) its nice to have software that actually is decent and comes with the OS, Microsoft could implement this just as easily in all versions of their OS, I never understood why they did not and instead and relied on people using system restore which could always make things messy.

The backup feature in Vista Ultimate worked well but took hours to make an image, but it was useful.

I just wish it worked properly with Time Machine(Mac OS X). HP have a version that will back up a mac but I believe you still need the OS install disk for restore purposes and Apple I think  only allow a network(NAS) restore  from there proprietary Time Capsule.Like most of these things backup is straightforward with multiple options but getting a method of restore (without installation) is another matter.

I 'dropped' the phone, Gary, but I have to confess, I had got cross with it, and 'dropped' it with some force.  :red:  The screen will now not stay lit, unless I twist the chassis of the phone.  :(

It's got to be a broken connection, it's just whether the repair is simple. :(

i love BSOD

did u try just yanking the power cord leaving it a bit and then try to boot the system again.

My computer on the release date for modern warefare 2 my computer decided to change which drive was the primary then it decided it just wouldnt dectect any harddrives.  that was really really annoying and all from a restart because steam wouldnt let me activate it

Rik

I did, Colin. None of the usual stuff would work. It shut down OK last night too, so no clues there.  :dunno:

Look in the bios for an option to allow legacy usb devices (or something like that). That should allow the use of the wireless keyboard without being in windows.

Oh, and version 10 is the good version :)

version 10 is the good one is it. i was thinking it was 9 that was the one to have, well I never....thanks again Lance  :thumb:

Noreen

I've got version 10 of Acronis True Image but I think you'd be very lucky to get a copy now. Many agree that it's the best version, it's very easy to use and has saved me several times.

Rik

Just once is enough to justify owning it, isn't it. :)
