I agree. Much as I'd like to have one, there's no way I could justify spending that kind of money on it.

Remember this is on PAYG. Obviously it's going to be ridiculously expensive.

It works out at more then £500 with the lowest pay monthly + charges though, Seb. I'm paying Orange £10pm for 300 minutes any network, unlimited calls to landline and to my magic and group numbers, and the 'dumb' handset was free.

Well yes, but can you compare? Think about anything else - cars, for example - and the same applies.
