A Basic Network Question

Hi all, could one of you Mac experts please tell me an easy way to switch the ethernet controller on and off as required ? That is to be able to disconnect/reconnect to the network/internet as I want.

In Windows and Linux it's just a case of having a shortcut/icon on the desktop or taskbar, right clicking it and selecting enable/disable as needed but I can find nothing like that in Snow Leopard. Most likely because I'm new to it :-)

System Preferences, Network, then click on the little gear cog in your network panel which is at the bottom of the list of your network adaptors, and make service inactive for your live connection.
