hi
I am hoping to come back to idnet. I can have ADSL2+, is my Netgear DG834Gv2 router ok with this or should I go for the ADSL option. If I opt for the ADSL2+ and it does not work correctly can I go back to the ADSL. My stats are. Any advice greatly recieved.

Your line is similar to mine, so I'd expect you'll get a 3-3.5M profile. I've found ADSL2+ has generally been a good experience for me, with a few bad BT moments. :)

I would advise a router upgrade, though, to at least v4 of the Netgear, or try a 2-Wire 2700, £10-15 delivered from eBay.

will it do the job for now. I see there is a firmware update, some say its ok with ADSL2, some not.Her indoors will not be pleased if I start spending on a new one. Get xmas out the way then it will be OK.

Its a bit old I admit. I dont think it will work with Windows 7 anyway so looks like I will have to get another one. I might opt for the ADSL anyway, I dont do much downloading nowdays.

A router should work with any version of Windows, the only thing you have to consider is the modem really, v2 used the TI chipset whereas v4 uses the Broadcomm.

To get NM down, you need to reduce the noise pickup on your line which is within your control. How is your router connected, eg via an extension or plugged into the master socket, what else is connected to the phone line, what filters are you using, have you disconnected the ring wire?

If you have a removable front on your BT master socket remove the front, and plug the router into the test socket using as short a cable as possible. Take a look at the stats and see if the noise margin has reduced, if it has, then the wiring in your home is picking up noise. If it stays at 15db then there won't be much you can do.

People on the forum, have changed their flat modem cables for a twisted pair cable with good results. It's better to have a short modem cable and a long network cable, rather than the other way around.

I dont have the NTE5 faceplate, but I will soon ;D. The router is plugged into the maste socket, and the only extension is to my Sky HD box. I may invest it one of those filtered faceplates.

The 15db margin is on the upstream though isn't it? The downstream at 6.5db is almost spot on to where it should be.

Sky boxes are thought to cause problems. They phone home and accept incoming sky calls silently. I take it the Sky connection is via a filter. If you are not contractually obliged the usual advice is disconnect the the sky box phone lead.
