the thing that annoys me about the printer I have now,HP Photosmart C8180, is the times it does 'printing preparation.......' or whatever its called. My wife has just printed 1 page, it spat it out no problem, she sent another to print put the printer decided to go into this maintenance mode or preparation thing, whirred and clunked for about 30 seconds then stopped but didnt print the next job.this is a regular thing that it does too not just a one off.

its really annoying, why does it do this.does it use ink during this.can you turn it off.

I like this printer apart from this and was thinking of sticking with HP for my next one as I have to give this back to my daughter  , but Im not sure as to go with HP or not now.

Have a word with HP support, Baz, it may just be that the firmware needs updating.
