  i seem to have 'obtained' some software on my system with out my knowledge.just seen an icon in control panel for something called Windows Cardspace 

Now where did I get that from

I think its integral to netframework so cannot be uninstalled separately

Cardspace can be disabled Start > Run > services.msc > Windows CardSpace > Properties > Startup type: Disabled.

Noticed this in windows 7. It just looks like bloatware. At least it is not as obtrusive as Windows Live For Games.
