Any ideas what comes next?

Yesterday I got a slight increase in sync (about 300k) and my profile was 5500. SNR at 8.5 - 9

I just did a BT speedtest, and this is what I get:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 2047 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :6924 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 946 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 16.71:22.72:60.58 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.

The results of this test will vary depending on the way your ISP has decided to use these traffic classes.

Router log is empty ?!?

Here's what my router reports for the internet connection (not the DSL connection - the actual internet connection), though:

Type:   PPPoA
Uptime:   1 day, 11:06:39

which suggests there have been no disconnects.

Last week after random disconnects I contacted support, who had BT check the exchange (even though the symptoms all pointed to a local problem here), and I received a message on Tuesday that BT had, indeed, found a problem at the exchange which they fixed - so what the hell has happened to my profile. After my recent shenanigins re-wiring my network and getting an improvement I was looking forward to a significantly improved speed over the next couple of weeks - not this.

I would guess that the random disconnects you have been having (and now hopefully fixed) have lowered the profile on your line to 2 Meg. If your line now stays stable and connected your profile should increase automatically to the 5.5 to 6.5 meg range but it will take up to 14 days (but normally more like a week) for the line to retrain.

The profile was fine last night (5,500) - it's dropped since then. The disconnect issues were fixed on Tuesday - suggesting something else.

I've just upgraded the firmware of the router to the latest version just in case it's a software thing causing instability (though I can't imagine it is). Suppose I'll see how it goes - if there's no improvement by Monday it's back to support I think :(

The maximum time for a profile to rise is 5 days, with bigger changes happening quicker. Slightly odd that your throughtput is higher than profile though.

I noticed that lol. However - throughput is at the maximum for the profile - according the ST itself.

I can only assume a BT glitch for this latest. As at 7:15 this morning my profile is back to where it was. Phew.

They haven't started playing here yet, the engineer on Tuesday indicated that they would start digging my garden up today. If they do it next week and need access to my home, it won't happen, I'm working 8 - 6 everyday.

Just an update - got my first re-sync after the woes today, up to 6518 with SNR at 9 - 9.5. Not enough for a profile jump, but heading in the right direction.

Looking forward to the target SNR getting down to 6. Anyone care to hazard a guess at what sync I'll achieve (I'm hoping enough to get me back to a 7150 profile - not so sure I'll make 8000).

If your current target is 9db, you should gain 5-700k, so 7150 is a realistic target, Steve.

There's every chance current target is higher - I'm reading 9 at peak time evening, when line noise is higher anyway - I'll check in the morning and see where it's at before I go to work (this morning it was 11).

Edit: And remember - I had three months stable at SNR of 2.5 with a sync of around 8.5 Mbs

You need to check immediately after a resync, Steve. If it's 12, then you could be achieve a full 8128 in time.

See - there's the problem. I'm no longer forcing the issue. I'm simply letting line management do the job. Trying to force increases in the past achieves very little. I'm happily playing the waiting game this time :)

What this means is that I'm usually out at work when the re-syncs happen.
