12 gig file

I've been trying to copy a 12gig file over to my son's external drive and it won't accept it. It goes onto my external drive so why won't it copy to his.?

Perish the thought but is there enough room on your son' exthd?
I presume you have connected his exthd to your 'puter direct, can your 'puter see it?
All a bit basic I know but one has to start with obvious probs.

Another quick thought, is your son' HD configured to FAT32. If so the max size you can transfer in one go is around 2 to 3 Gb.

Yes I my PC can see it and just as you have said, I bet he hasn't formatted his drive to ntfs whereas it's the first thing I did with mine.

Is it too late to change his or would he lose all his files?

it would be wise to back his files up before doing the conversion, however I have done this convert process quite a few times and never had any issues, but you never know ....

I, too, have converted drives from FAT to NTFS without incident, but a backup is always a nice security blanket.

With regards to Somanyholes post - it may be worth highlighting that C: is an example - your son's external will almost certainly not be C - so remember to substitute.

I've copied all the files on the EX HD to another disc as a precaution and am about to convert to ntfs.

I've heard that ps3 consoles will only play from a FAT32  EX drive. Is this true?

Looks like you'll have to split it if possible.

All sorted and converted to ntfs with no loss of data.  He can buy himself a second HD for the playstation when he finds out it's not able to go back to Fat32
