Hi,
My Netgear DG834 v 3 router works absolutely fine with my old mac and pc. I've a new MacAir and am trying to get an internet conenction.

Connected the ethernet cable, then opened Safair and types http://192.168.0.1 in the url box, but I'm just getting an error message that safari can't connect.

I tried rebooting the router, but it didn't help.

What am I doing wrong?

With thanks,

LinLin

Steve

What's network preferences saying regarding the ethernet connection?

I cannot get any connection to the router at all through the browser. That's the problem!

Steve

I am assuming you have no internet connection with the macbook air that is why I suggested looking in Mac OS X network preferences to see if that will give any clues If it says not connected make sure you in the advanced section you enable use DHCP and perhaps add 192.168.0.1 to the DNS

Aha -- OK, now I understand. Thanks for your patience, there.

OK, now I'm in Network Setup Assistant, and it's asking for:

IP address (I assume this is 192.168.0.1)
Subnet mask (I have no idea what this is)
Router address (also assume this is 192.168.0.1)

Many thanks --

LL

I ve never used the assistant ,the IP address is for the Macbook air  if you can set use DHCP the IP will be assigned automatically. The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 but as said earlier using DHCP you shouldn't need to set of this apart from perhaps a DNS for the router

That's it!!

Once again, this forum rocks.

It is one of the main reasons I chose to go with Idnet, and once again a problem has been quickly answered by someone helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable.

I'll go rate Idnet very highly on dslzone. Again.   :thumb:

Thank you!!

Steve

Set the wireless up in similar fashion obviously you'll need your wifi security password. If the ethernet cable is connected this seems always to take priority over wifi,so disconnect first.
