I have a Netgear 834gv3 router with wireless disabled.  Running Windows XP service pack 3, Firefox, Thunderbird, AVG 9.0 free and Spybot.  Whilst checking for potential causes of severe loss of download speed I noted a comment that the Netgear internet connection light should be steady green.  However, I observe that mine blinks.  The interval between blinks varies between about a second to 10 seconds. Even with Firefox and Thunderbird closed.  Also continues when computer put into standby or hibernate. The basic colour is always green.  The Netgear manual states that this indicates that data is being transmitted or received by the Internet port.  However I am not aware of being connected to anything other than Idnet.  Is this normal or correct or do I have a problem?  I cannot recall if it has always done this or it is a recent phenomenon.

Rik

It's normal, it's just 'keep awake' traffic between router and DSLAM. (I assume you do have the wireless side secured?)

Welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

Coincidentally that I've just looked at the meaning of the lights as I have the same router but it failed to connect wirelessly about a hour or so ago. The lights indicated that everything was okay so I connected with the cable, reset/reconfigured the router and everything is okay and it's working wirelessly again.

Having had my problem answered by Rik I did not go back into the thread again so did not see your question until doing a search. If this comes to your attention the answer is yes  it is the Tehidy near Camborne. Tehidy is part of my street address. With apologies for the late reply
