DG834GT problem

Seem to be having problems with my network but not the main computer.

Basically the laptop and PS3 and upstairs PC work most of the time, but every now and then (once or twice a day) either will try and connect and it will just try and acquire the IP address of the network and just fail. i reboot the router and it works again. PS3 and laptop are wireless and PC is cabled. the main PC i use never has any problems. with the laptop it connects to network and has "excellent connection" but just no Internet access, i trouble shoot and it says connect cable to "local area connection". but as i said, a reboot fixes it.

Any advice?

Wireless can be flaky, Gazz, and this sort of behaviour is not untypical. Try setting a different channel in the router, 1, 11 or 6 are the preferred options.

If that doesn't solve it and your using firmware 1.02.19 go back to an earlier version i.e 1.02.16 . I see there is also the latest v1.03.22 The .19 has DHCP issues.

I cant recommend a firmware version though except perhaps the DGTeam, none of them are a complete fix it seems, you solve one issue and then get another i.e UPNP vs DHCP

Im currently on Firmware Version  V1.02.19 , ill try the changing the channel. current my mode is G only, is this ok?

G mode only is fine. It's probably a DHCP issue, so either use a different DHCP server or try different firmware, though Netgear's firmware appears to be in general quite awful. I'm going through my own misery with a new Netgear router that was supposed to be an upgrade. Currently, copying a large file... crashes it.

I had the same problem and it was down to the router and it needed to be changed, an inbuilt fault with this router. Some work OK but many have problems.

1.02.19 and1.03.22 have well known DHCP issues and what you are seeing is the router failing to serve up an IP address.

I've tried 1.02.16, 1.02.14 and DGTeam_0848 (which is a tweaked version of 1.02.16) and still get this issue spasmodically.  With 1.02.19 and 1.03.22, I can't last 24 hours without the issue appearing.

I'm currently using 1.02.14 at the moment and finding that is the most stable version I've tried to date.

Thanks Quandam, but sadly I own a different Netgear. Just fair warning for IDNet users -- according to Netgear technical support I have just been talking to, the DGFV338 is incompatible with.... BT lines.

I dont think it supports Microsoft VPN clients either.

Because no one did research  :dunno: saying that its being sold on Broadbandbuyer so I would take what Netgear says with a pinch of salt, the tech support...well its not really, if it goes off script they go off the rails

Seriously I can't copy any files from this server to the main one in Warwick. The router crashes, dropping all connections. I think I may have to try and return it :( They just sent me a new unauthorised firmware but it does nothing for me.

Thanks for the response, and yes when the net goes down on the laptop it says on the connection "acquiring Ip address", which it dose not. how do i go about going back to 1.02.14?

Sorry to be lazy the firmware upgrade/downgrade instructions are here http://www.vpncasestudy.com/reset.html further down the page.Firmware can be accessed from the netgear site ,tick show all firmware. IE is the recommended browser for this task ,FF javascript causes issues with users thinking the task has finished when in reality it has not thus screwing up the flash. I've not had a problem using FF but always wait at least 5 mins after it says it finished. A reset is (often) required after the firmware change. If you back up your router settings prior to this its very easy then to restore these after the firmware change.
