When I started my computer this morning it did a check disk, should I be concerned about this result?

Did something shut down unexpectedly, Noreen?

It looks as if it was free space  allocated in the MFT, Noreen, installing IE8 caused that when i used windows, you dont have any bad secors by the looks of it, but I would do a full chkdsk to be sure, it may take a while but I used to run one once a month as part of maintenance, just tick both boxes in the check disk field, and let it do its thing.

I didn't notice anything, Rik. Yes I'll probably do a full check, Gary, although I haven't got IE8.

Rik

CHKDSK is usually triggered by a disk anomaly, often caused by a 'bad' shutdown. Maybe it's just feeling sulky. ;) Keep an eye on things and, if necessary run CHDSK again. (Might be worth making an Acronis backup in the meantime though.)

Did you install Vista SP2 in the end, Noreen? That caused similar issues, its the same on a Mac you just check permissions after a big upgrade or even a browser one. Maybe there was a power fluctuation and that's caused it to not shutdown properly.

No I haven't yet installed SP2 but am thinking about doing it. I usually make an Acronis TI backup at the start of every month so will probably sort all this out then. ;D

Noreen

I've now downloaded SP2 although haven't yet installed it. It downloaded in just a few minutes, I'd thought that it would take ages. :) I'll probably install it later today.

Rik

You got in just in time on the free bandwidth. ;)

Yes I did however I never use anywhere near the limit anyway.

Rik

Me neither, I've used the same amount I always do...

I tend to use between 9-19Gb a month I do a lot of gaming and iplayer, plus downloading series from iTunes, but I have not gone over my usual either.

BTW the SP2 installation didn't work. I remembered later that I had tried to install it before with the same result. I get an error message 0x80070026, a google check shows many people with the same problem. Doesn't appear to be a definitive fix for it and Microsoft haven't got anything. So I've come to the same conclusion as I did before, as I've got all the MS Security Updates since SP1 I'll just live without SP2.

Rik

I have the same issue with XPSP3 on my Acer laptop, Noreen. It would be nice to know why, wouldn't it.

I think some security suites and AV's cause it to fail, shutting them down before installing can help, or just removing them beforehand then reinstalling which is sensible anyway considering the nature of the update.

Noreen SP2 may not install if your drivers are not all up to date for your machine, that was the case with SP1 with me for a while it would not install do to a creative driver also the full download may install rather than the one from windows update, tbh I would get windows 7 and install over the top its a better OS from what I have seen, or better still do a clean install from scratch and remove any glitches.

I tried the download and install later method, disconnected from internet and then disabled NOD 32 and SpywareBlaster, wouldn't install. Then tried direct install from MS (didn't like to disable AV etc while still online) anyway got same result. Until there's a simple cure that I can cope with, I'll just live with it. I know that there are some minor things wrong with my computer setup but generally it works.

Best to leave it as is Noreen, otherwise you could be looking at a clean install, unless you have an image from when you first got it. What I hate with Laptops well Windows laptops especially is all the useless stuff that's put on them, Acer seem the worse offenders for that.  :shake: It took me over 30 minutes to just uninstall the rubbish on the one I used to have.
