Hi All,

Forgive me if this question has been asked before, but I was just talking to Tim at IDnet who suggested I try here for your expert guidance.

I'm just getting my MAC code today (within the hour I hope from Xilo) and was checking to see if anyone knows if it's possible to run an xbox 360 and a PS3 on line at the same time using IDnets supplied Netgear wireless router?

The reason I ask, is that a while ago, I tried using a netgear, and could not get it to work with both machines, seemingly, it raised NAT problems, giving access to one or the other console, I tried BT broadband, option 3, and the home hub supplied, made by Thompson, worked 100%, so wanted to know what you folk thought?

If all goes well, I'll be on the HomeSuperMax deal, again, any comments from gamers, for things like pings, lag etc?

Both my sons are mad gamers, so want everything to work 100% from the start.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Hi Dave

I'm no gamer, so can't help a lot I'm afraid, but Home SuperMax does give you exchange priority and will improve ping times by 5-10ms.

Thanks Rik,

Just hope someone comments on the netgear, as I need to buy one to use IDnet services, and obviously, don't want to buy the wrong hardware.

Steve

I can probably let you know tomorrow, I know they both work separately via Netgear DG834N and idnet.

Dave,

Can the console be allocated a static IP each? An alternative maybe a router with 2 or more wireless channels.

Thanks guys for quick replies.

Not sure about separate IP address, not something that been mentioned before.

Thing I can say for sure, on some Netgears, the firewall is severe, resulting in the problems mentioned, may have been a old netgear issue, maybe IDnet's supplied netgears are better now, more up to the job?

Rik

Netgears are not an absolute requirement for ADSL2+, Dave, I use a 2-Wire 2700 for example.

I'm currently using the Thompson speedtouch 585V7 supplied originally by Zen, modified afterwards by Xilo to work with LLU, so that's the only hardware I own.

My current exchange, Chester North, has LLU, but not 21CN, so I'm stuck with LLU from various providers, or ADSL.

We hope to move house soon, and the new exchange to be, after the possible move, http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/NDCAS has even less choice :bawl:

Rik

In that case, concentrate on a router that meets your needs, rather than one which is certain to work with ADSL2+.

Once more, thanks Rik,

Just taking a look at broadbandbuyer, and can buy hardware much cheaper from them than supplied by IDnet or indeed any ISP that I've dealt with so far, but reading IDnets terms, they seem to say they will provide info/support to only the hardware purchased off them, other hardware help gets refered to the hardware maker, which is worrying in case something goes wrong.

Well the deed is done, just spoke to to Tim at IDnet, and signed up via MAC code to HomeSuperMax, at £34.99 a month.

Just got buy the hardware now ;D

Hi. I am not sure what would stop you playing both at the same time. Think of it the same as running 2 pcs off the connection (or 3 if you include your pc). It should just work, but if the devices were both trying to use the same IP, than that's a problem. But I am sure someone here can give you some manual settings to enter. I say just give it a try first.

If you have ping problems, you can ask IDNet to turn off Interleaving. Interleaving improves stability of a line, but slows your ping down slightly.
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

Steve

I can only see an issue if a port forward is shared by both devices and I presume in this situation even with UPNP enabled the router would not know where to send the packet. The UPNP seems better to me in Netgears later firmwares.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

I've ordered the Thompson Speedtouch 585V7 ADSL/ADSL2 wireless modem router from broadbandbuyer, it's one I know worked NAT wise when I had Zen, as I paid them just under £59 for it (replacement one from broadbandbuyer cost only £39.99), minus all the zen software that they seem to programme into them.

I'll get the new router (weather permiting) on friday this week, and go live with IDnet on December 13th, wednesday, so again, thanks everyone, and I'll post back here with results.

I belive the best way to do it (from reading other forums) would be to assign the Xbox a static IP and put it in the DMZ.  Then use the PS3 as normal or port forward it.

Might be some more information here
