HELP!  This morning I tried to print and it said printer not on line. Tried unpluging printer and it came up with device not recognised, changed the usb printer lead and pluged it in direct (not through hub) with the same result.
Uninstalled printer and driver, rebooted computer and using Canon disk tried to reinstall. All goes well untill I reach the part where it says plug in printer and turn printer on and the it says "printer not found". All this points to the printer usb port faulty but why it was working last night and nothing has changed. What the hell is going on? HELP   :dunno:

I assume your motherboard USB port is the same USB type as the printer  ie  both USB 1  or USB2

Are the USB ports listed as working OK in Device Manager ?

have you tried the Add Printer option in Control Panel ?

Try deleting ALL the USB hubs and ports via the Control Panel, then let it rediscover the devices.

Just tried "add a printer" from control panel. It says it's installed but then tries to print a test page and says printer not responding and will not print.

iP6700D.
Just ran hardware and device trouble shooter and it says   " Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" this is for port#0002.hub_#0005

The only other printers there are not hardware printers.

So its either the usb port or the printer I presume. Glenn's suggestion in detail

A. Click on Start
B. Right Click on Computer
C. click on Properties
D. Click the Device Manager button.
E. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers section.
F. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
G. Restart the computer, and allow the computer to reinstall the USB controllers. See whether it works

Thanks all  ;D  Just deleted each device (had to start and work from the bottom as the top one stopped the mouse working) and rebooted the computer and all is working again now. I would just like to know what caused it so I can try to prevent it happening again. I must admit I was at the point of backing everything up (accounts etc') and reinstalling Windows 7 and all the fun and games that would have caused, might yet soon.  :eyebrow:

A corrupt OS USB port driver would be my guess Den. Deleting then allows the OS to reload a good version of the driver.
