I rang my current provider up and invited them to entice me to renew. I currently have a Nokia N85 8GB, and was after an N97. They could have done it - but at £10 per month more. So the haggling started.

We eventually settled on the Samsung S8000 Jet - for a renew contract (same as my old one) - for.................................Less money :)

And the reviews I read of this phone whilst on the call were all positive. It should be here by next week :)

And the best of it - the call was free from my existing mobile  :thumb:

Nice one, Steve!  I've never really looked at the Samsung range, as I know one or two people who have them (not the Jet), and hate them, but they are not in the least bit techy, so probably don't know how to use them properly.

Well - I was tempted to stick to my guns - but this is LED screen - higher res - and the only thing it's missing is the qwerty keypad.

I'll let you know - I still have the 14 day cooling off period.

Nice one, Steve. Let us know what it's like. :)

It arrived today - and first impressions of the phone are favourable. Very compact, touch screen is responsive (after calibration), and Java powered - so there must be a huge number of apps available for it.

The downside is - the Samsung software does not, as yet, work on Win 7 64 bit, which means the only way to even transfer content is via bluetooth (slow), or, like me, dual boot with linux (in which case it just works).

Still, I need the windows USB drivers for the phone to work to get GPS working (well, to install the software at least).

I'm very disappointed that a company like Samsung can't get their drivers working properly, though I'm sure I'll find a workaround (and probably one that's cheaper than a subscription GPS service).

Web browsing is very fast and the display is excellent.

Oh - and you can even make phone calls on it if you hunt around enough for the feature.

Nice to know that latter point, Steve.  ;)

I wonder when making calls will be listed as a 'feature' on phones?  ;D

Maybe I just got lucky - but I tried re-installing the software tonight and dumping the USB for connection in favour of Bluetooth. All went well and I got an update warning. This is clearly new since yesterday, so I allowed it - and now USB is working just peachy :)

Perhaps Samsung were waiting for me to take delivery ;)

Quick update - but I'm loving this phone as I get used to it. I bought a years sub to Route 66 Sat Nav on it - and wow - compared to Garmin on the N95 it flies. After setting the phone up - it gets easier to use by the day. Still a couple of quirks to work out (mostly tech stuff - such as tailoring the settings to my specific needs) but I like it a lot :)
