Hi

I keep getting a very slow intermittent connection, and the noise margin keep falling through the floor, it should be and normally is about 6.0db

But here are the stats :

ADSL Link                  Downstream     Upstream
Connection Speed    5395 kbps            846 kbps
Line Attenuation             49.0 db          28.5 db
Noise Margin             0.4 db             4.6 db

any ideas

Rik

None from that data. You're on WBC, so it could be that DLM is finding a high error count on your line, or it could be a BT fault or engineering work. Whereabouts are you.

I'm on the Stratford exchange in east London

There have been problems at Bermondsey, Mile End and Stepney, perhaps they've had a knock on effect?

If you lose connection, call support on 0800 710 2000 and someone will get back to you. Otherwise, if speeds are still poor, talk to them on Monday.

Stats now:

ADSL Link                      Downstream     Upstream
Connection Speed    5395 kbps            846 kbps
Line Attenuation             49.0 db            28.5 db
Noise Margin           3.2 db           6.4 db

Rik

WBC is much more susceptible to noise than Max, because of the higher frequencies involved. I see a 3db swing, whereas it used to be 1db on Max.

I thought the guys at Idnet could set the noise margin, why has it gone down so much, the IP of my line is 4000k and I am about 2km from the exchange.

I'm sure they did  something when I first connected to WBC and adjust the noise margin, so it was between 6.0db and 9.0db

Rik

They can see it, but they don't monitor lines all the time.

I'm not sure why you are posting your line stats, they show the NM varying, which it will do throughout the day. That's perfectly normal. I currently have a 10.7 margin dropped from 12 when I came online this morning. You don't appear to have lost sync at all.

it's back to 6.3db

I realise it fluctuates, but not so widely, that was why I posted them, but everything seems better again now

Get yourself a copy of Routerstats or Routerstats Lite:

http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm
http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/moreinternet/files.htm

Run that for 24 hours and you'll get a clear picture of the variation, but I see a swing of 3-4db these days.
