Hi All,

Friends are Idnet customers and very happy to be so. However tonight they tried to send a couple of emails and got an error. Basically they couldn't connect to the smtp server. The mail servers for their OE are set to pop3.idnet.net and smtp.idnet.net and they use freemail addresses.

I changed the smtp to smtp.idnet.com and resent the emails with a test mail to myself. OE connected to the server and the emails were sent. All appeared to be in order. However the test message sent to me hasn't arrived as yet and it was sent over an hour ago. No idea if the other mails were delivered.

The test mail was sent to me at a which.net address so outside the Idnet network. Any ideas?.

I have .com addresses and they appear to be working via smtp.idnet.com. The Network status page gives no indication of a fault however it may well be that there is an issue with the .net mail server . Can I suggest that if its not working by tomorrow am that they contact support first thing.
I have sent an email to support If I get a reply this evening I will let you know.

Thanks Steve, will do. The test mail still hasn't arrived yet and it was sent via smtp.idnet.com

Well last nights test message still hasn't turned up. However I did another today, and bcc'd to another address. The bcc was delivered in seconds but the which.net one took five minutes. Looking at the headers in the which.net mail, it appears that a two minute delay was suffered whilst working through the ntl servers before being forwarded to the which mail servers.

It looks like Idnet is not responsible for the delay after all.

Thanks for letting us know.  :)

Oh dear, it appears this problem reappeared. My friend sent me an email to my which.net address last night around 6.30pm, and cc'd it to my domain email address. It arrived at my domain email address, but hasn't arrived at my @which.net address. The @which.net address is in use and receiving mails as normal. I use a third party smtp server (i.e not ISP related) and can send mails to myself at which.net and they arrive in seconds.

My friend uses an idnetfreemail.co.uk address and the smtp server is set to smtp.idnet.com. Is it possible to do any checks at Idnet to see what is happening. If it can be shown that Idnet are forwarding the mail to which.net, I can then get which to have a look.

Call support. It may be that there's a server being black-listed somewhere, but we can't do much from here. Sorry.

I thought an idnetfreemail account was smtp.idnet.net and not .com
