I think it's a case of we get them when we need them. Things must have been quiet on the virus front for a few hours. If we were using Norton, we'd have no idea!

As this thread is nothing more than a game to see who can post the latest NOD32 virus signature first, surely it should be moved to the gaming section? If anyone wants to know what the latest NOD32 update is, it can be found here: http://www.eset.com/support/updates.php

Hi Rob

We have discussed this before. I don't consider it a game to post the latest update, it's here as a service, just as my post of the latest Java update is. As I've said previously, we could refer people to other sites for all updates, but I believe it useful to have as much information here as possible. I took on your comments earlier in the month, and separated the NOD/AV updates from other software updates to try and help.

I have another reason for running the NOD version number. From time to time, on the official support forum for NOD, I see posts from people having problems with updates not working correctly. By having the latest version posted here, members can check easily that their own systems are working correctly.

Well Rik I don't agree. Only 5 people said yes to the poll that you ran. 5 people said no, and we can assume the other 400+ members of the forum had no reason to vote yes. It's not a service that is useful to, or relevant to IDNet and I can't see how it can be seen as General Computer Help.

If you aren't getting downloads correctly then the best place to confirm this is on the official Support Website http://www.eset.com/support/updates.php or is it too much trouble to go there to find out the official line? By all means people should be welcome to post here when they are having problems with updates but that is not the nature of this thread.

Seriously, why do we need to have an unofficial thread on this forum to track a piece of software that is very well supported on the official company website?

I tend to agree with your comments Rob, if the downloads were not automatic ones, then perhaps the thread would be valid, I use AVG, not NOD, and that auto-updates daily, so no point in posting updates, if it is out of date the task bar logo goes from colour to black and white, surely NOD must have a similar warning system built in.

My update ( above ) for Spy-Bot S&D was perhaps justified, as this doesn't auto update, however, it isn't the end of the world if it isn't bang up to date.

Just my 2p's worth.

Hi Rob

Hi Rob

On that basis, presumably you would abandon all update notifications as they are available from other sources? Or is it just the NOD updates that bother you?

I have previously given you my view that, with a small, tied, poll, I planned to continue to allow the thread, but I did try to find a compromise and split virus updates from other software updates. I thought from your post in that poll, here, that you were reasonably happy with that concept. However, it seems that this is no longer the case.

As I have said, someone has to make a decision in this situation as to what to do, and I decided that I would continue support for NOD (or any other AV) updates. If you remain unhappy, I can only suggest you PM Adam, as he is the ultimate arbiter in the forum.

Afaik, Inactive, NOD does not warn if it's out-of-date - this may be because I have never seen an out-of-date copy, or it simply does not warn. I do see occasional threads on the NOD support forum about users having problems with their copy of NOD not updating, and it's for this reason that I have kept the thread running.

In an ideal world, what I would like is a 'whiteboard' system of posting, so that each update, for any software, would could over-write the earlier version, but the forum software doesn't support this.

Fair enough Rik, however, I have to say that it gets a bit tedious going through all of the NOD updates that don't apply to the majority of users, just to see if there are any updates of other stuff.

Anything and everything that I post on here is purely my opinion, it ain't going to change the world, you are under no obligation to agree with me, it is purely my expressed opinion.

Rik

Well, the only other thing I can think to do to get near a 'whiteboard' approach is to use moderator tools to modify a base entry for each piece of software, so that we end up with one post per application.

Providing forum members don't mind their post counts getting 'docked' as I delete the posts and copy them to the 'root' post for each application, that would provide a smaller thread.

What do you think?

If that's acceptable to members, I would start from April 1.

Adam

I can't really see a problem with the virus definition update posts; users who want the service can view the thread and those who don't ignore it. If anyone has a major issue with the thread, please feel free to contact me.
Adam

DorsetBoy

Why don't we just have a NOD32 sticky?

Anyone wanting to see the latest updates just goes to this URL......

NOD32UPDATES

and they can see the last posted update and the threats covered. ;D

(The web site is sometimes a few hours behind the update servers.)

Rik

As I've said to Rob, Dorset, the logical extension of that is that we don't post updates for any software, but just have a sticky with links to update sites. The whole aim of these updates threads started as a service to members, a 'one-stop shop' for information. As you rightly say, the updates are often ahead of the Eset website, which seems another good reason to keep the thread running.

Given that NOD produces the most posts, it will have its own thread from tomorrow, all other software updates will be in the second thread.

DorsetBoy

Well sorry Rik but I for one think that this thread is redundant and pointless.
It looks a mess as it is.

Updates to security products would be better served in a sticky thread with links to the relevant company site.

Anyone serious about their security wil surely have a direct link to their vendors update/threatsense/advice service. ESET provide the TreatSense Centre AND a free email service to all customers that delivers information on the latest threats as they are found.
Any decent security provider does much the same, so page after page of update numbers is to my mind a nonsense.

Rik

I understand your views, Dorset. I can only repeat what I have already said. If members don't want the information, they can ignore the threads. For those that do, they will be there as a service.
