The Netgear DG834Gv4 has been losing contact with the PC ever since I upgraded to Windows 7, sometimes not for days and then sometimes 2 or 3 times in a day for no obvious reasons and the only way to reconnect is to reboot the router. The Windows Compatibility site only lists v5 of the router so I'm guessing mine is actually not compatible.

Your thoughts/advice would be appreciated. Which router should I go for. The Netgear DGN2000 looks like an ideal replacement, and also the Windows site says it's compatible (£69.99 in Currys at the moment, whereas it seems to be about £85 elsewhere).

I like the Netgear DG834Gv4, but it just doesn't work properly.

Any thoughts?

I haven't moved to Win7, so I'm no help whatsoever.

Are you using a cabled connection or wireless, btw?

Is it just the wireless machine that plays up, the cabled one or both. I could understand the wireless (almost), but the cabled connection is standard ethernet, so it puzzles me.

They may be doing v5, and they did, at one time, also supply Speedtouch.

It's the ethernet cabled connection. There seem to be many issues with disconnection between the PC and this router in Windows 7.

I've changed the Network Adaptor setting to never allow the PC to save power etc I've also installed a brand new network adaptor, but nothing has fixed it

That really doesn't make sense to me, not that I don't believe you, I'm just wondering what Win 7 can do to an ethernet port, which is such a universal standard.

I don't have any problems with W7 and my 2wire 2700HGV, wired or cabled.

The 2700HGV listed in Ebay, some say unlocked, others dont state this

I bought a Speedtouch 585 years ago from ebay and it ended up in the bin because it was locked to Tiscali, hence the reason I bought the DG834Gv4 in the first place, so I'm never sure what I'm buying on Ebay.

Unlocked is preferable, but take a look at the 2700 board here, all you need to know is there.

I'm presuming, OP, that you have done the obvious things such as try another cable, ethernet port and re-flashed the routers' firmware yes?

I installed Windows 7 on a newly built computer at the end of December with a Netgear 834 attached. Almost immediately I started getting dropped internet connections, sometimes several times a day. If you asked Windows nicely it would repair the connection until it happened again. I fixed it by the following method and since then I haven't had any further failures.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Services

Scroll down the list until you get to items starting "network". If any of these show manual, change them to automatic. You may need to reboot.

You may also get a dropped connection when waking up from sleep (computer not you). My solution is to go to Power Options in control panel and change the sleep criteria to "Never".

Maybe SP1 will fix these!!

I have a wired connection from my Windows 7 PC directly to a netgear switch (which then goes into the Netgear DG834Gv4) and not seen any issues you mentioned since I installed Windows 7 in October '09.

If it's any help, I have onboard gigabit Realtek on the Abit AW9D-Max motherboard, and installed the latest drivers directly from the Realtek site. Try to avoid installing drivers that Windows Update suggests as that can be the source of the problem.

edit: also kept on a previous firmware on my netgear because of Steam multiplayer issues, v5.01.09

Thanks for the information although I'm very pleased with the 2700HGV which hasn't locked up/blocked internet traffic at all since installing on Saturday morning, and so I'll be sticking with that box for now.
