The best speed I normally get is around 1.5mbit d/l, however, for the last 2 days it's been stuck
at around  :eek4: 250 kbps. A few stats below, any ideas what I can do TIA.

Speed Test Results
Date 02/02/10 20:38:29
Speed Down 237.07 Kbps ( 0.2 Mbps )
Speed Up 370.01 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

Statistics    Downstream   Upstream
Line Rate    2176 Kbps   448 Kbps
Noise Margin 6.1 dB   11.0 dB
Line Attenuation 63.0 dB    31.5 dB
Output Power 17.1 dBm    11.9 dBm

:welc: :karma: Spencer. Do you have a NT5e socket? If so follow Kitz fault finding guide http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/troubleshooting.htm

Hi Spencer :welc: :karma:

Can you manage a BT speedtest @ http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ it will give us your IP profile. The modem stats look ok except your obviously a long way from the exchange. Perhaps check with support tomorrow to see if your local exchange is congested , you can get details here http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/ but they're often out of date

Thanks for the replies.

Here's the BT test result

Download speed achieved during the test was - 212 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2176 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 250 Kbps

Not sure what has happened, it has been chugging along around the 1.5mbit speed for the last 18months until sunday night. I have had one of those BT-Iplates on the main socket for the last couple of months but it made no difference to the speed.

Steve

You certainly had a problem looking at your IP profile its way down which is the reason for your low throughput, what else have you got connected to your phone line i.e sky boxes ?

Lance

Hopefully as everything looks fine now, the profile will recover within 5 days.

5 days yikes ! good excuse for me to defect and get cable now, I can't live with this ridiculously low speed, with my distance from the exchange ~2 miles, I think, I'm never gonna get blistering speeds anyway

Glenn

It looks like you are even furthe from your exchange, than I am from mine. My attenuation is 59db

Can't add to the above, Spencer, but  :welc:  :karma:

That's just what the router is reporting, Spencer. Most can't report more than 63db, so the chances are it's even further from the exchange, in cable terms, than you think.

As Steve says, if you tell us a bit more about your phone wiring and what's connected to us, we may be able to help you nudge that speed up a bit. :welc: :karma:

I just have the standard BT-NTE5 ? master socket, into which is plugged a BT I-plate (for the last 2 months) there is also one other seconday socket in the house (with micro filter) and a telephone.

As I mentioned earlier, for the past 18 months or so, the speed has been acceptably poor, hovering around 1.5mbit d/l but since Sunday it's been terrible 250kbps. Since I  haven't changed anything, I don't really understand what the likely cause of this slow down is.

Thanks.

Rik

Hi Spencer

Remove the faceplate at the master socket and check what wires are connected. You need wires on terminals 2 & 5, usually the blue/white & white/blue pair. If there's anything connected to terminal 3, remove that wire and check that it's not connected at the other socket either.

Thanks, is this the *Bellwire* fix ?  I'm pretty sure I did this already, but will double check that it's disconnected on both sockets.

Rik

It is. But check for paired wires at each end too.

Got the typical *scripted* response from technical support, already tried pretty much everything they suggest !
So not particularly helpful ! It's already been stuck at the slow speed for more than 96 hrs.

Interestingly the slow down in speed corresponds with date the increase in download allowance came into effect  :)

I haven't tried another router yet, however, my assumption is that if my current router was broken it just wouldn't work at all !

Steve

Do you know whether you've had any resyncs during this period.? The script is entirely correct in that the profile will rise if your connection is stable, however the odd one does seem to get stuck.

spencer

Forgive my lack of understanding but why would the profile of the line suddenly change after 2 yrs, I've done several BT speed tests before and the profile was always between  1 - 1.5 mbit, now suddenly it is only 250kbps.

Not sure about the resyncs, but the service here has always been iffy in the sense that the speed would gradually get worse during the day,  restarting the router would always fix it and presumably it  resyncs at a higher speed then because the d/l speed ialways mproved.

Glenn

A high resistance joint, between you and the exchange. Engineering work happening along the route. Neighbours plugging in new equipment, houses 'share' one of the 3 electric phases produced. Work in the exchange. They could all cause problem out of your control, Spencer.

Steve

For some reason you've had a low speed sync which has dropped your IP profile. BT drop the IP profile very quickly if a lower sync occurs and then take days in allowing it to recover in the upwards direction. As I said before if its stable it will recover .Repeatedly reconnecting the router is often interpretted at your exchange as a sign of a flapping line and the treatment is to up your margin and lower your sync.

Why has it happened-something internal or external to your property has caused this low sync event hopefully it has passed. You can monitor your connection by running router stats  continuously ,if your resync you will see the margin on the graph fall to zero.

Okay thanks, I will leave the router on and monitor over the w/e, hopefully it will improve.

One thing I did forget to mention is that I've have always been plagued with line drops here, I put this down to me being so far from the exchange, an uptime of anything more than 6 hrs would have been good

Den

Time for a 2wire-2700HGV to sort out your line drops. Just check the thread for them and you will see how they have helped so many of us.  ;D
Mr Music Man.

spencer

Good news ! It seems to have recovered over the w/e

Download speed achieved during the test was - 1624 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2176 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1750 Kbps

Glenn

I hope it stays that way for you Spencer.  :thumb:

When i had a long line at my old home it boosted my speed and stopped dropouts. My line is pretty short now with a 7150 sync so it would not be of any help, also I need 2.4 and 5ghz wifi in a single box as the router is in the lounge (centre of my home) and my wife limits the technology as ornaments department  ;D.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't
