I'm not sure how to take these conflicting results.

Zen Exchange Checker is showing 5 greens.

BT says....
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:
    IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
    Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6041 kbps

despite all the extra disconnects and router reboots of late I still sync at 8128 x 448

and yet the speedtest are giving me....

TB = 2224.86 Kbps down and 382.77 Kbps up
Speedtest.net = 2461 kbps down and 387 up
Speedguide.net = 2142 kbps down and 382 up
news-europe.giganews.com = 1974

Nothing physical has changed at my end but somehow I'm just getting a fizzly 1/3 of the oomph that I used to get before the start of the year. I've stuck it out with promises of service upgrades (much like I did with PN) but now that the new central is (rumoured to be) in place I'm seeing very little benefit from it at all.

Given your profile is OK, that rules out a low sync event, so I'd recommend phoning support to see if they can help.

That will be slowing your throughput, try 1458/65228 and see if that helps. Make sure your router is set to 1500 or 1458 as well (I always leave the router 'wide open' and manipulate in Windows).

Ok Rik, with 1458/65228 and router at 1500 the testers are coming back with....

Speedguide.net = 1967 kbps ↓ and 378 kbps ↑
Speedtest.net = 1543 kbps ↓ and 383 kbps ↑
TB = 2319.22 kbps ↓ and 377.64 kbps ↑

I'll try my router at 1458 now to see what happens.

Might be worth opening up MTU to 1500 all roud, Rich and see how that goes. Also try the Namesco test. See how that goes.

FYI, on a 2500 profile, I would expect to see something in the region of 2400/380 from Namesco and, on my 3000 days, 2900/380.

Although the spikes in Netmeter looked a lot healthier during the tests the results have been averaged it out at...

Well, given the range of figures you have tried, I would suggest going back to the BT tester. If the profile and throughput are similar to those you posted earlier, it sounds like it might be an issue with the various speedtester sites.

Personally (on my up to  8 meg connection) I use MTU: 1500 RWIN: 201480

Peak's certainly not the best time, Rich, but go here and select the Analyzer option at bottom left. That will suggest a bunch of RWIN values to try. Plug in larger ones until you get the best speed, then go here and run TweakTester. That will tell you if you are starting to get dropped packets. Compromise to get the best answer in both places.

MTU = 1460  (can't attain real 1500 - googling hinted that it might be something to do with ethernet)

I'm a happier bunny now than I was earlier today (thanks guys) but the fact remains that I was getting better results before without any tweaks at all.

Miriam recommends an MTU of 1458, but 1460 is close enough. The overheads put on the data consume part of the packet, so the working maximum data size is 1472, however, if you have the router and Windows at 1500, that is taken care of automatically. Download TCP Optimizer from the first site I gave you. Set your router to 1500 (and leave it there, let Windows set the 'actual' MTU)  and set Windows back to 1500. Then use the MaxMTU option. It will give you the best MTU value for your connection. See if that improves things.

That said, the two highest readings are not far off the theoretical max for your profile, which is 6919, and are on target for a 7000 profile.
