Loss of carrier and service

I've often heard/seen the terms Loss of carrier and Loss of service and wondered what they really meant. Can anyone here explain them to me, and the difference (if any).

Loss of service is sometimes the 'fault' reported by routers when PPP or sync go down. I'd imagine that Loss of Carrier relates to much the same.

I agree Lance, I'd equate loss of carrier with loss of sync.

I'd have thought that carrier would be the company (so loss of carrier meaning fault at the providers end) and service problems being the actual line/exchange.

I suppose it can have different meanings when applied to different things. I'm just thinking from a mobile phone perspective.
