Have spent most of the afternoon trying to get a mates connection up and running, unfortunately I've failed miserably :'(  I can ping the IDNet DNS servers but can't get any further than that, no internet, no pings to internet sites :(  I have a submitted an email to support, but it's driving me nuts.

Can someone enlighten me as to the possible cause. All the tests on the Speedtouch 585 come up green.

You know, growing up not long after the war, the Spitfire was iconic - and I still believe it to be one of the most elegant planes ever designed.

Meantime, back at your problem. My first thought would be to look at the MTU/RWIN settings, sometimes they can produce symptoms like this if wildly off. Try 1458 for MTU and 65228 for RWIN. If that doesn't help any, try pinging www.bbc.co.uk using the -l and -f flags. Start with a value for l of 1472, eg ping www.bbc.co.uk - l 1472 -f, and reduce the l value by increments of 8 until you get a result. If you still don't get anywhere, try setting the router to use DNS Primary: 213.208.106.212, DNS Secondaty: 213.208.106.213. That's Nildram's DNS servers. If they work, it would seem to indicate an issue with IDNet's DNS servers, but they are OK for me right now.

Was he previously connected to another ISP? If so, it might just be worth doing a factory reset on the router and staring from scratch in case some legacy setting is causing this.

The strangest problem I've had trying to get broadband working on a line was with a customer of mine. He had arranged his own adsl and I was going to connect it up for him. I just couldn't get the thing to work. Phoned his isp, who was a reseller so he said it would take a while and we basically gave up for the day. Following day it was found that there had been a mix up between my customer and the isp and that the isp had asked bt to broadband the wrong line. Doh! I was a bit surprised that nobody checked that the phone line actually matched the customer. Makes you wonder how much of that goes on, and heaven forbid how many cease orders go through without such checks  :-\

I suspect it happens more than we would like, Rob. :( Was the ADSL put on another line belonging to your client, or somewhere else entirely?

Somewhere else entirely, somebody else on the exchange would have had adsl on their line without knowing for a few days  ::)

You've got to love it when BT do things on the monumental scale, haven't you?

and before anyone asks I don't know :)

Rik

In that case, the answer must have been 42. :)
