Having decided to venture into the world of OpenSim (Kinda like a new frontier for SecondLife users) I quickly discovered that Windows is not the best platform to run the server on.

On Weds - I killed PC2 (the server), on Thursday I failed to revive it, last night I installed Windows on the second hard drive, and recovered my backup up the all important server files to DVD.

This morning, I got Ubuntu server edition installed (no fancy windows and a redundant mouse now. Console only) and got my OS server up and running :)

This is the first time I've tried a server install, and a problematic one at that - I am so pleased with myself that it not only works, but is stable :)

Just an update,

After using Ubuntu Server for a few days, and successfully migrating my server from SQLlite to MySql, and backing up across the network to my Windows PC (call it redundancy), all without the benefit of a WIMP interface, and having been a Linux user on and off for years (always with a desktop environment), I'm really starting to see the attraction of Linux in its' own right now.

Granted, there's a lot of typing (since it's the only way I have to communicate with the computer), but my is it quick, and not so complicated once you start to get into the swing of things.

An added bonus: When I was running the server on Windows I had to restart it at least once a day. Running on Linux server I haven't had a forced restart yet :)
