Hi All,
Just moved over from AOL  :D yesterday and so far i'm very impressed with the way things are. i signed up to home max which gives me 30gb of bandwidth which i'm sure for all the downloading i do will be plenty but is there any way i can monitor my monthly allowance.  ::)

Login to your user account here and select Broadband. You'll see your daily usage in graph and tabular form, together with an estimate of your likely use for the month. The estimate can be distorted if you have a heavy day, but works pretty well over the period.

Given you have moved from AOL, I would advise you to check your MTU & RWIN settings. If you're not sure how to do this, please ask. MTU should be set to 1458 in the first place, RWIN will depend on your connection speed, but try 65228 for starters.

If you go to the IDNet website and login to your account, then click "Broadband" top right, you get a daily breakdown of what you have used, both as a graph and a list.
Is that the kind of thing you need?

Well, we do tend to be of like mind, Jupiter. :) I decided to add a piece on MTU as cammara has come from AOL.

Thanks rikbean and jupiter for the advice. I've not checked my MTU & RWIN settings can i be a pain and ask how i do that.

I have a Netgear router so checked setting on that found MTU and as you said its set to 1458 cant find the RWIn though.

Rik

You're not a pain to ask - how do you think I learnt how to do it? :)

Go to here and down load TCPOptimizer. Run it (it doesn't need to be installed, just pop it in a suitable folder and create a shortcut), and change the settings there, making sure that you have the right network adaptor selected if you have more than one. It has a utility to check your optimum MTU, so I'd suggest opening up the router to 1500 before you start, then let it tell you what will work best for you (at least to start with).

On the same site, there's TCP Analayzer (left of the page in the navigation options). Go there after you've made your changes (you have to re-boot when you change these settings), consider trying some of the other RWIN settings it offers.

Finally, go here, not working at this moment, anc check your settings with their tweak tester, it will reveal any packet loss.

Once you'd done (and before you start!) run a speed test which you have found gives consistent results, and see if things are improved.

Where do i change my RWIN

Rik

Did you get hold of TCP Optimizer? Start by hitting the MaxMTU tab and see what it gives you. Then enter that on the settings tab, by selecting custom settings. For me, it looks like this (don't ak me why it says cable modem, it only does that on this machine!):

Hi
Thats it done my settings were not too far off what the optimizer optimal settings were. Tweaked MTU to 1500 with optimizer and on my router left the optimizer to set RWIN though i might experiment using the tweak tester.
AOL was not that bad though (honest) untill Car Phone took it over, i then started to get throttled went from around 6000 kbs normal times to 512kbs from 6pm to 10pm, i know we all loose a bit at peak times but this...........well spoke to AOL (ok customer service is very very poor) they said they had been getting a lot of complaints my line was fine so there is nothing they could do.
So i  asked for a MAC code and i recieved an e-mail 1hr later with the code(they must not like me!) ;D
Thats my story.
Heres a link to my latest test all going well  http://www.speedtest.net/result/96707817.png
Thanks for all the help

Sound advice, Mo, which I should have given. Mea culpa. :(
